WTA Women's Tennis Rankings as of May 14, 2012

Serena Williams moves three spots into no. 6 in the latest WTA women's tennis rankings as of May 14, 2012. The American tennis star blasted the current world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka to win the 2012 Mutua Madrid Open in a dominating 61 63 victory in the finals. Earlier in the tournament, Serena also blasted world no. 2 Maria Sharapova by the same score. Her victory over Azarenka ties her with sister Venus as the active players on tour to have the most wins (13) against a reigning top ranked player.

The loudest message however is that Serena has bounced back from a so-so start in the first quarter of the year to post a perfect 13-0 record on clay thus far. Serena won five matches in Charleston to go up 5-0, then added two more wins to help the US back into the World Group of Fed Cup, and has won six matches to win Madrid. She lost only one set during this streak and she enters the red dirt in Rome's Internazionali BNL d'Italia as the hottest player on clay.

With one week remaining before the seeded players for the 2012 French Open is finalized, this week's women's tennis ranking is important as it gives a glimpse of possible match-ups later in the draw. With Serena's advance, defending French Open champion Li Na is now ranked no. 9 and can possibly meet the top-ranked players as early as the round of 16. Other significant ranking movers include Maria Kirilenko who moved three spots to no. 16 and Mona Barthel who rose three spots to no. 32. There are 32 seeded players at the French Open.
