Federer edges Berdych, wins 586K euros for 2012 Madrid Open title

Tennis fans want to know who won the top prize money of €585,800 for lifting the 2012 Mutua Madrid Open men's singles championship trophy. Well, the battle between world no.3 Roger Federer of Switzerland and no. 7 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic resulted in a three-set 36 75 75 victory for the Swiss former no. 1. With the win, Federer also earned 1000 ranking points and rises to become the world no. 2 player. As runner-up, Berdych takes home €287,225 in prize money and 600 ranking points. The other semifinalists, Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina and Janko Tipsaveric of Serbia each earned €144,560 in prize money and 360 ranking points.

Before the start of the 2012 Madrid tennis tournament, Federer held the top career prize money record of $69,746,521. By virtue of reaching his fifth Madrid Open finals, the Swiss surpassed the $70 million mark. Berdych meanwhile was no. 30 in the career prize money rankings prior to Madrid. With his achievement in the tournament, he leapfrogs David Nalbandian of Argentina and retired Patrick Rafter of Australia to move ahead two spots to no. 28. Berdych is the only Czech remaining in the top 30 of this exclusive list as the current no. 7, retired former world no. 1 Ivan Lendl has acquired American citizenship.

In terms of 2012 year-to-date prize money, Federer and Berdych were no. 3 and no. 8 in the list with earnings of $2,316,585 and $673,475 respectively. With their Madrid earnings, Federer now surpasses Rafael Nadal of Spain as no. 2 and Berdych becomes the sixth player to earn more than $1 million for the year. The list is headed by world no. 1 Novak Djokovic and aside from Djokovic, Nadal, Federer,and Berdych, other players surpassing the $1 million are Andy Murray of the United Kingdom and David Ferrer of Spain. Ferrer, a quarter-finalist in Madrid also passed the million-dollar milestone during this tournament.
