Tennis Tournaments - March 2012

>> Wednesday, February 29, 2012

February 2012 is over and possibly the most boring month in the tennis calendar is done. Still, it was a month where we witnessed world #1 Victoria Azarenka won her third title of the season and remain unbeaten for the year. It was also in this month where Roger Federer won his 71st ATP tournament title pushing his career money earnings to more than $68million, a record that would most likely stand in the next 3 to 5 years. This month also saw Juan Martin del Potro continue his climb back after an absence forced by injury – the Argentine reached back-to-back finals in Rotterdam and Marseilles. He lost to Federer in the former, while he won his first title in the latter. On the women’s side, there’s no doubting that this month belonged to Agnieszka Radwanska. Poland’s #1 won in her first visit to Dubai and has now reached a career high #5 in the world rankings. But then, February is done and we move to an interesting month in the tennis calendar.

March 2012 will feature only two tennis tournaments in the ATP and WTA calendars. Yet, these tournaments are possibly the two biggest tournaments outside of the grand slams and the season-ending championships. These two tennis tournaments are the BNP Paribas Open held in Indian Wells, California and the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, Florida. It’s springtime in the United States and both East and West Coast tennis fans will get to enjoy competition between the best tennis players in the world.

Indian Wells 2012 will continue to host a 96-player singles draw, with 32 seeded players receiving a bye in the first round. In its bid to become the largest event in the ATP and WTA tours, the tournament is awarding $1 million to both the men’s and women’s singles champions. It is the first ever combined tennis tournament to award such amount to both champions outside of the Grand Slams. In less than 5 years, the tournament has doubled the total prize money offered to players, from $5.8 million in 2008 to $11.1 million in 2012.

Most top 50 ATP players will be in attendance for the Indian Wells 2012 tournament, including all of the top 10 men’s tennis players. The field will be led by the three most successful players in men’s tennis in the past 10 years – world #1 Novak Djokovic, #2 Rafael Nadal, and #3 Roger Federer. Djokovic and Nadal have been crowned champions twice in Indian Wells, while Federer holds the record of being the only player to have won three straight titles from 2004 – 2006.

On the WTA tour, the field will be less exciting with the absence of Serena and Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters. The Williams sisters have boycotted the tournament since Serena won in 2001 due to perceived unfair treatment they’ve experienced from tennis fans. Clijsters, the 2003 and 2005 champion is out due to injury. World #1 Victoria Azarenka leads the field and is expected to fare well in the hard courts of Indian Wells although she has never won a title her. She will be challenged most likely by 2006 champion and world #2 Maria Sharapova, Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, and defending champion Caroline Wozniacki. The Indian Wells 2012 field in both the men’s and women’s singles draw features 11 former BNP Paribas Open Champions and 14 Grand Slam Champions.

The Miami 2012 tennis tournament will be as spectacular and star-studded as Indian Wells 2012, perhaps more so in the women’s side of the draw. Both Williams sisters will be in attendance with 5-time champion Serena an annual contender to hoist the title. Her sister Venus was recently awarded a wild card into the tournament as she has fallen outside the top 100 in the rankings. World #1 Victoria Azarenka will remain the player to beat – it was in this tournament where she won her biggest title beating Serena Williams in the title match in 2009. She repeated the feat last year and will be coming in as the defending champion.

On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic is the defending champion as he added last year’s title to the one he won in 2007. Roger Federer has won twice in Miami as well, but surprisingly, this is one of the tournaments where Rafael Nadal hasn’t won a title yet. Andy Murray has done well in the past taking the 2009 title, and Andy Roddick may want to turn around his current disappointing form that has seen him dip to #30 in the world rankings after he won here in 2010.

One particularly interesting story developing for the Miami 2012 tournament is the participation of former top 20 player Alisa Kleybanova. The talented young Russian was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in May 2011 and she withdrew from her scheduled tournaments for the rest of the season to undergo treatment. She finished her treatments last December and was granted a wildcard into the main singles draw by the tournament organizers.

March 2012 will be an exciting time in tennis with the Indian Wells and Miami tennis tournaments featuring quality competition and compelling storylines. Will Novak Djokovic repeat his sweep of both tournaments as he did last year? Will Azarenka hoist both trophies to remain unbeaten? Will Nadal win his first ever Miami tennis tournament? Will one of the Williams sisters grab the Miami title for the United States? Will other players get to hoist the champion’s trophy at Indian Wells and Miami 2012? Stay tuned and enjoy the action.

[View Players | Schedules | Scores | News | Photos | Video | Tickets | Watch Live | Sponsors at the Indian Wells 2012]. The defending champions in both the men's and ladies singles draw are world #1 Novak Djokovic and former world #1 Caroline Wozniacki. Djokovic also won the title in 2008 while Wozniacki reached her second straight final last year after falling to champion Jelena Jankovic in 2010.

Indian Wells 2012 – Tennis Players

The top 10 players in the world for both ATP and WTA tours have confirmed attendance in the Indian Wells 2012 tennis tournament. The men’s field will be led by world #1 Novak Djokovic, #2 Rafael Nadal, and #3 Roger Federer. This tournament is Nadal’s first tournament after losing to Djokovic in the Australian Open 2012 singles final. Nadal was champion in the tournament in 2007 and 2009, while Federer is the only player to have three straight titles from 2004 to 2006. The US men’s campaign will be led by top American players Mardy Fish and John Isner. Former world #1 Andy Roddick who reached the finals in 2010 before losing to Ivan Ljubicic is also entered.

The ladies field will be headlined by world #1 Victoria Azarenka who has already won three tournaments this year and has not been beaten so far, world #2 and 2006 champion Maria Sharapova, world #3 and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, and defending champion Wozniacki. Wozniacki will have her hands full in being able to defend her title as she is struggling with inconsistent results so far this year. She has failed to win any of the tournaments she entered this season and has fallen to #4 in the world rankings after starting the year as #1. Two former champions will be missing in the draw – Kim Clijsters who won in 2003 and 2005 has withdrawn due to an injury while top American player Serena Williams have boycotted the Indian Wells tournament since winning her second title in 2001.

Dubai Tennis 2012: Federer beats Murray, wins 5th Dubai Title

03/03 Update: World #3 Roger Federer won a record 5th Dubai title by beating #4 Andy Murray in straight sets 75 64. The win is Federer's second title this month and his 72nd ATP tournament title. He earlier claimed the Rotterdam crown for his first title 2 weeks ago. Federer takes home $409,170 in prize money for winning Dubai 2012 but more importantly, he brings a 10-match win streak and into March where two of the biggest tournaments in the ATP calendar will be played in Indian Wells and Miami. In doubles, the #4 seeded pair of Bhupathi and Bopanna beat #3 seed Matkowski and Fyrstenberg to win the Dubai 2012 doubles tournament.

03/02 Update: In an exciting development at the Dubai 2012 tennis tournament, world #4 Andy Murray turned the tables on world #1 Novak Djokovic by upsetting the top seed in straight sets 62 75. Murray now advances to the Dubai 2012 finals where he'll be going against world #3 and 4-time Dubai champion Roger Federer. Federer needed two tiebreak sets against in-form Juan Martin del Potro 76(5) 76(6) to advance to the finals where he's going for a record 5th Dubai championship. The Dubai 2012 final will be the 15th meeting between the two players with Murray holding a rare 8-6 advantage over the 16-time grand slam champion. The two haven't played for more than a year with their last meeting occurring during the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in 2010. Federer beat Murray at a round robin match in straight sets. A win by Murray will push his career prize earnings to more than $20 million while if Federer wins, his record career prize money earnings will near the $70 million milestone. The doubles final will be between the 3rd seeded pair of Matkowski and Fyrstenberg vs the 4th seeded pair of Bhupathi and Bopanna.

02/27 Update: World #1 Novak Djokovic won his 16th straight match at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships by eliminating Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in straights sets 64 62 at the start of the Dubai 2012 ATP tennis tournament. Djokovic now advances to the second round as he is attempting to become the first ever player to win the Dubai tournament in four consecutive years. He will be heavily favored to win his next match where he will meet the winner of Ukraine’s Sergiy STAKHOVSKY and UAE’s Omar AWADHY. Stakhovsky is ranked #74 in the world while Awadhy is a 30-year old local wildcard who is currently listed as unranked in the ATP tour website.

Joining Djokovic in the second round is American 6th seed Mardy Fish. Fish beat Andreas Beck 61 61 and will advance against the winner of the first round match between the Mikhail YOUZHNY of Russia and Richard GASQUET of France. World #3 and second seeded Roger Federer is scheduled to play his first match on Tuesday against Michael LLODRA of France. Llodra was a finalist in last week’s Marseilles Open. Besides Djokovic, Federer was the only other player to have won the Dubai ATP tennis tournament for 3 consecutive years. He achieved the feat in 2003 to 2005 and also won the 2007 tournament. Federer is going for his 5th Dubai title this year – a record for the tournament.

Two interesting wildcard players with strong athletic connections didn’t win in the first day of action. Marko Djokovic, the younger brother of Novak lost in straight sets to Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev. Marko who is currently ranked #869 gained entry into the tournament via a wildcard and he was beaten 63 62 by Golubev who is ranked #143 in the world. The other wildcard, Sergei Bubka, the 25-year old ranked #190 lost a closely fought match to #76 Lukas Lacko of Slovakia. Lacko emerged the winner after a third set contest that featured 30 points in the final tiebreak and where Bubka held multiple match points in a 26 62 76(14) loss. Like Marko Djokovic, Sergei Bubka is also connected to a tennis player #1 being world #1 Victoria Azarenka’s boyfriend. Bubka is also the son of Olympic pole vault champion Sergey Bubka.

Watch ATP Memphis 2012 Finals Live: Raonic vs Melzer

>> Saturday, February 25, 2012

The Memphis 2012 ATP tournament finals match between talented young Canadian Milos Raonic and Austrian veteran Jurgen Melzer will be broadcast online live through video streaming. The Memphis 2012 ATP finals live action will start on Sunday, February 26, 2012 - 15:00 LOCAL. 21-year old Raonic will be going for his third title this season, and fourth overall, after winning in Chennai last January and in San Jose last week. 30-year old Melzer is vying for his fourth ATP tournament title and first in two years. He last won a title in the ATP Vienna 2010 tournament. The winner of the Memphis 2012 tennis final will win $277,915 in prize money earnings while the runner-up will take home $125,300.

It will be Raonic's second trip to the finals of the ATP Memphis tournament. He was runner-up to Andy Roddick last year after also winning the San Jose title the week prior. Raonic has now won nine straight matches and is 15-1 for the season. His only loss came at the hands of Lleyton Hewitt in the third round of the Australian Open. With a win at the Memphis final, Raonic may have a chance to reach the top 20 for the first time in his career. He is currently ranked #35 and previously held a career best ranking of #25.

Melzer advanced to the finals by defeating the top-seeded and third-seeded players in back-to-back matches. He eliminated #1 seed American John Isner in straight sets in the quarterfinals before subduing #3 seed Czech Radek Stepanek in three sets in the semifinal round. His semifinal win marked the third time he won in three sets this week after beating both Denis Istomin and Ivan Dodig in final set tie-breaks earlier in the tournament. Melzer will have experience to his advantage against Raonic having turned professional nine years ahead of the Canadian, but the undeniable talent of Raonic will make him the favorite going into the ATP Memphis 2012 final.

Radwanska is very in Poland, where she was born and where currently resides. She started playing tennis at the age of four. Her sister Ursula also plays in the WTA. Radwanska speaks Polish and English and considers Paris as her favorite city. She admires American tennis legend Pete Sampras and would like to become #1 and win a Grand Slam someday.

Novak Djokovic Ranking

Novak Djokovic's ranking history began way before he started playing tennis. Djokovic began playing tennis at age four and made his professional debut at the age of 16. He first entered the ATP ranking system on July 2003 ranked a lowly #767. It took Djokovic almost four years to reach the top 10 ranking in March 2007. In just over a month, he reached the top 5 in late April 2007 and he hasn't been ranked any lower than that. However, Djokovic's rise to the top ranking took a long time considering that he was a top three mainstay since 2007. There were two reasons for that - he happened to be in the same era with the best clay court player ever (Rafael Nadal), and perhaps, the best player ever (Roger Federer). It took Djokovic three Grand Slam titles before he would be able to ascend to the top spot in tennis. He won his first major title at the Australian Open 2008, his second was at the Australian Open 2011, and his third was at Wimbledon 2011 to supplant Nadal as world #1. Since then, he has won the US Open and Australian Open titles for his fourth and 5th major Grand Slam wins. He will attempt to become the next player to win all four career Grand Slam titles by winning the French Open 2012. Djokovic has now been ranked #1 in the world for a total of 34 weeks. He stands #14 in the list of most weeks ranked as tennis world #1.
