Stanford 2012 Finals Live Stream: Serena Williams vs Coco Vandeweghe

>> Sunday, July 15, 2012

It will be a battle between a veteran American tennis star and an up-and-coming American player who is 10 years younger and is playing in her first ever WTA finals when top-seeded Serena Williams plays lucky loser Coco Vandeweghe in the 2012 BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC tennis tournament in Stanford, California. The premier level tournament will have it's championship match today Sunday, July 15, 2012 at 1pm local time. The doubles final will follow after the completion of the singles final. Watch the Stanford 2012 finals live online streaming here for non-US viewers. For fans within the United States, online live streaming links are available here.

Vandeweghe, who lost in the last round of qualifying, was allowed in the main draw along with two other lucky loses after three players including no. 7-seed Petra Martic withdrew before the tournament started due to injuries. The young American then went on a tear beating Melinda Czink in the first round, no. 4-seed Jelena Jankovic in the second round, Urszula Radwanska in the semifinals, and finally downing no. 5-seed Yanina Wickmayer 62 36 62 to reach her first ever WTA final.

Vandeweghe is currently ranked no. 120 but her finals appearance guarantees her a jump to at least the top 80 in the rankings which will allow her to gain outright entry into the US Open main draw starting in the last week of August. She also is the first lucky loser to reach the final of a tournament after the same achievement was done by Czink, Vandeweghe's first round opponent, at Canberra in 2005.

In the night match, top seeded and world no. 4 Serena Williams was just too powerful for Romanian no. 9-seed Sorana Cirstea. Their semifinal match was done in an hour with Serena the 61 62 victor. Serena is playing in Stanford after winning her 5th Wimbledon title and 14th Grand Slam last weekend. She is the defending champion and has dominated her opponents losing just 10 games in three matches on her way to the final. She had a first round bye, defeated American wildcard Nicole Gibbs in the second round, beat no. 6-seed Chanelle Scheepers in the quarterfinals before her semi-final against Cirstea. She is aiming to win her fourth title of the year after lifting trophies in Charleston, Madrid and Wimbledon.

Williams has now won 27 of her last 28 matches and is aiming to match the 43 WTA titles her older sister currently have, which is the most amongst active players. Williams and Vandeweghe will be playing each other for the first time and Vandeweghe doesn't have a single top 5 win to her name. The winner takes home the $96,000 top prize money earnings and 470 ranking points. The runner-up wins $53,000 and 320 ranking points.

2012 Newport Tennis Finals: Isner vs Hewitt Live Online Stream

It will be a battle between the American no. 1 and a former no. 1 player from Australia when John Isner and Lleyton Hewitt contest the finals of the 2012 Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport today Sunday, July 15, 2012. The men's singles final starts at 2pm local time followed by the men's doubles final between the Great Britain team of Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins vs the Mexican-American pair of Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky. Watch the 2012 Newport tennis finals featuring Isner vs Hewitt live through online streaming here.

The top-seeded Isner is the defending Newport titlist and is aiming for his first ATP title of the season. He defeated fellow American and no. 6-seed Ryan Harrison 7-6(4), 6-3 in the semi-finals. Harrison and Isner will be representing the United States in the Olympics and both players are using the Newport grass tournament as tune-up for the Olympics event that will also be held in the grass courts of Wimbledon. Isner reflected on his past 12 months which saw him rise all the way to being the top American player.

"It’s feeling very similar to last year... I wasn’t playing well and I was ranked in the 40s when I came here last year. I desperately needed some wins and confidence, and that’s exactly what I got... This year, it’s pretty much the same, although I’m ranked a lot higher than 46th. I didn’t play well in Europe. It’s as simple as that. I’m always most comfortable in the U.S., which is something I need to work on. This is where I play well the most."

Isner's final opponent is Australian's Hewitt who is currently ranked no. 233 in the world. Hewitt holds a 2-0 advantage over Isner winning their initial meeting in the hard courts of Shanghai in 2009 and on the clay courts of Dusseldorf in 2010. Both affairs have been identical 6-2 6-4 wins for Hewitt who has 28 ATP career titles against 3 for Isner. At 6'9", Isner is almost a foot taller than the Australian who stands at 5'11". Hewitt defeated 2009 champion Rajeev Ram 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to reach his first ATP final in more than two years. Hewitt is now through to his eighth grass court final and he has never lost in the seven previous occasions.

The winner takes home $68,220 in prize money earnings along with 250 rankings points. The runner-up wins $35,920 in prize money and 150 ranking points. Watch 2012 Newport Tennis Finals live online and enjoy the men's singles finals match featuring Isner vs Hewitt.

Edberg and Becker Interview in Bastad - July 2012 (Video)

>> Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Growing up in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Sweden's Stefan Edberg has been one of my favorite players. He was very mild mannered, and he had an elegant game. His main rivals were Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl, and to some extent, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. He reached all four Grand Slam finals winning twice at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. He lost a memorable 1989 final at Roland Garros to a 17-year old Michael Chang. I was very excited to watch a recent interview video of Stefan Edberg with long-time rival Boris Becker at the 2012 Bastad ATP tournament. Watch the Edberg - Becker recent interview here.

Tennis Olympics 2012 - Who will win in London?

It's a once-in-four-years experience for tennis players in the world's greatest sporting event - the Olympics. For the 2012 London Olympics, the top players in both the ATP and WTA professional tours will be in attendance led by current world no. 1 players Roger Federer and Victoria Azarenka. The Olympic tennis tournament will be held at the grass courts of the All England Club in Wimbledon, England from 28 July to 5 August 2012. The men's gold medalist in singles will be awarded 750 ranking points while the women's gold medalist will be given 685 ranking points. In perspective, these ranking points are more than what a Grand Slam quarter-finalist would receive but less than that of a Grand Slam semi-finalist.

Who are the favorites to win in London? For the men's singles tournament - current Wimbledon champion and world no. 1 Federer, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Rafael Nadal, Australian and US Open champion Novak Djokovic and hometown favorite and 2012 Wimbledon finalist Andy Murray are expected to contend for the gold medal. In women's singles, the prohibitive champion is 2012 Wimbledon titlist Serena Williams. Top ranked Azarenka - the reigning Australian Open champion, French Open champion Maria Sharapova, US Open champion Samantha Stosur, world no. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska and 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova are expected to challenge Williams for the gold medal.

Don't forget to return in two-weeks time as this blog will be covering the 2012 London Olympics tennis events. Five gold medal events are going to be contested - the men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles and the mixed doubles, a new event being played for the first time in 2012.

For the third time in his career, Roger Federer rises up to the world no. 1 ranking after a historic Wimbledon 2012 singles title that raised his record of Grand Slam wins to 17. On Sunday, Federer dashed the Grand Slam hopes of Andy Murray and all of Britain who was waiting for the first ever local hero champion at Wimbledon with a commanding 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory. With the win, Federer overtakes Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal to jump from world no. 3 to world no. 1 in the newest ATP tour rankings as of Monday, July 9, 2012. In the process, he now ties Pete Sampras' record of 286 total weeks as world no. 1.

Federer first reached the no. 1 ranking when he overtook American Andy Roddick on February 2, 2004. His first reign at the top came to an end when Rafael Nadal supplanted him as no. 1 on August 18, 2008. Federer stayed for a record consecutive stay at the top for 237 weeks during his first stint as no. 1. He again overtook Nadal on July 6, 2009 and stayed as no. 1 for an additional 48 weeks before Nadal took over on June 7, 2010. WTA Women's Tennis Rankings as of July 9, 2012

Before the start of Wimbledon, there were three players with the chance of emerging as the world no. 1 player. French Open champion Maria Sharapova, Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka, and Poland's no. 1 player Agnieszka Radwanska all had a chance to be the WTA tour no. 1 player. Sharapova was upset in the fourth round and because she wasn't able to defend her ranking points from last year when she reached the finals of Wimbledon, she would lose the top ranking to either Azarenka or Radwanska. Azarenka lost her semifinal match to eventual winner Serene Williams but just had enough points to regain the top ranking from Sharapova after Radwanska lost in the final. When the new WTA rankings are released on Monday, July 9 - Azarenka would be the new no. 1 while Radwanska will rise to no. 2, a career high ranking. Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams rises to world no. 4, a year after making a comeback following foot surgeries and an emergency hospitalization.

Andy Murray cries in Wimbledon Finals Speech (Video)

Andy Murray, the first finalist in Wimbledon from the United Kingdom in over 70 years, cries as he gave his runner-up speech after the Wimbledon 2012 men's final. Murray lost a tough 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 to new world no. 1 Roger Federer and he lost control of his emotions during the awards ceremony. Murray fought tears and struggled to speak - his first words were "I'm getting closer..." before he fought again to regain composure. The crowd cheered and clapped while Murray spoke through tears, "I'm going to try but it's not going to be easy..." he stammered before losing composure again. It is probably one of the more recent memorable speeches as a young tennis player lets his emotions out after the pressure of being the best hope to end Britain's drought of not having a men's champion since Fred Perry in 1936. Say what you will, this blogger just became an Andy Murray fan today. Watch the video below:

Federer wins 7th Wimbledon title, takes no. 1 Ranking

Roger Federer won the Wimbledon 2012 men’s singles title to extend his record to 17 Grand Slams when he beat local favorite Andy Murray 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. The win enabled Federer to equal Pete Sampras' record of 7 Wimbledon titles and also to grab the world no. 1 ranking from Novak Djokovic. Federer started the tournament ranked third in the world but jumped two spots after the top two players and last year's Wimbledon finalists - Djokovic and Rafael Nadal - failed to reach the finals this year. Nadal was eliminated in the second round while Federer eliminated Djokovic in the semifinals. Federer will take home the £1,150,000 men's singles champion prize money while Murray will take home the runner-up prize money of £575,000.

Serena Williams' 14 Grand Slams compared to Other #1 Players

By winning her 14th Grand Slam trophy, Serena Williams now trails three other tennis greats in the Open era who have won more majors than her. Steffi Graf's haul is 22, while Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova have won 18 each. But those three other players were from different generations, and in Serena's generation, she is considered unanimously - by peers, critics, experts, and fans alike - as the best player of her generation. So, what does 14 Grand Slam wins mean in terms of the current generation of WTA players?

For starters, let's have a list of how many Grand Slams were won by current or former world no. 1 players in the last 15 years.

Martina Hingis - 5 GS (3 Australian Open, 1 Wimbledon, 1 US Open)
Lindsay Davenport - 3 GS (1 Australian Open, 1 Wimbledon, 1 US Open)
Jennifer Capriati - 3 GS (2 Australian Open, 1 French Open)
Venus Williams - 7 GS (5 Wimbledon, 2 US Open)
Serena Williams - 14 GS (5 Australian Open, 1 French Open, 5 Wimbledon, 3 US Open)
Kim Clijsters - 4 GS (1 Australian Open, 3 US Open)
Justine Henin - 7 GS (1 Australian Open, 4 French Open, 2 US Open)
Amélie Mauresmo - 2 GS (1 Australian Open, 1 Wimbledon)
Maria Sharapova - 4 GS (1 Australian Open, 1 French Open, 1 Wimbledon, 1 US Open)
Ana Ivanović - 1 GS (1 French Open)
Jelena Janković - 0 GS
Dinara Safina - 0 GS
Caroline Wozniacki - 0 GS
Victoria Azarenka - 1 GS (1 Australian Open)

Svetlana Kuznetsova is the only player since Wimbledon 1997 who have won multiple Grand Slams without ever reaching the no. 1 ranking. She won the 2004 US Open and the 2009 French Open.

Here's some interesting observations regarding Serena's 14 Grand Slam win total, and how it compares to the Grand Slam success of other former world no. 1 players in the past 14 years:

1. She owns same number of major wins as the total of the two other most successful players in her generation. Serena's older sister Venus, and another rival, Justine Henin each won 7 Grand Slam titles each. Serena can actually contend for more Grand Slams, while the chances of Venus' winning another Slam is very small. Henin has already retired in 2011.

2. The nation of Belgium produced two superb players in Clijsters and Henin, both in the same generation as Serena. Their total Grand Slam wins fall three short of Serena's total.

3. Russia has produced two world no. 1 players (Sharapova and Safina), and three Grand Slam winners (Anastasia Myskina, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Sharapova) - all in the past 14 years. Russian players total Grand Slam wins is 7 - half of what Serena has won.

4. Hingis, Davenport, and Capriati all were ahead of Serena in terms of number of Grand Slams won by end of 2001. Their combined total is three less than Serena's total as of Wimbledon 2012.

5. Serena has won more Wimbledon titles than the total Grand Slam wins of five former no. 1 players - Davenport, Capriati, Clijsters, Mauresmo, and Sharapova.

6. On a more humorous note, Serena has won 14 more Slams than the combined wins of three recent number 1 players in the past 4 years (Janković, Safina, Wozniacki).

Serena Williams wins Wimbledon 2012; 14 Grand Slam title

Exactly two years ago in July 2010, Serena Williams was no. 1 in the world and recently won her 13th Grand Slam title in the Championships at Wimbledon. Earlier in the year, she won her 12th Slam by taking the Australian Open title in January. But, things unraveled fast and because of a freak accident and an emergency hospitalization, Serena would be out and away from the WTA tour for 11 months. Then, she started her comeback. In last year's Wimbledon, the usually steely Serena poured her out when she cried on court during her first round match. It was her first Grand Slam in a year, and though she failed to make the quarterfinal round, her comeback has started.

In the summer of 2011, Serena was on a rampage racking up wins in two US Open tune-ups and beating six opponents to reach the US Open final. She was the heavy favorite against Samantha Stosur in the final, but somehow, the Australian brought out her best game at the right time to win her first ever Grand Slam title. Serena would not play in another tournament for the year, and she surfaced back at the Australian Open in January failing to make a dent by quietly being eliminated in the fourth round.

Serena played Miami, a favorite tournament for the American and a place where she has been successful in the past. She went out in the quarterfinals to Caroline Wozniacki - a player she has never lost to prior to their encounter. Then came this spring's clay court season. Serena racked 17 straight wins and won two clay court tournaments becoming the prohibitive favorite to win her second French Open title. She however went out spectacularly, suffering her worst Grand Slam result ever, in a first round upset by Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano. It was considered one of the more shocking results in both ATP and WTA tennis tours in recent memory.

When Wimbledon came, all eyes were on the current world no. 1 - Maria Sharapova - who won her first Grand Slam title in Roland Garros to complete a career Grand Slam. Serena was certainly considered a favorite, but in the earlier rounds, she struggled big time against lower ranked opponents in the third and fourth rounds, losing a set in each match. But, as Serena has done through the years, she elevated her game in the final stages of the Grand Slam. She beat defending champion Petra Kvitova and world no. 2 Victoria Azarenka in back-to-back straight set victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Again, she reached the Wimbledon final as a top favorite to win her fifth Wimbledon title - she was after all facing a first time major finalist in world no. 3 Agnieszka Radwanksa, a player known for her consistency more than her grass court game.

So, when Serena won the first set 6-1 in just over 30 minutes and went up 4-2 in the second set, the whole tennis world expected Serena to wrap up the championship quickly. But, Radwanska had other ideas. Serena displayed a mental lapse that is somehow rare at this stage of this Grand Slam and before the audience knew it, Radwanska had battled back by winning the second set 7-5 and holding a 2-1 lead in the third set. Not to be unfazed, Serena replied with a service game of four aces and that allowed her to relax a bit. She would then win the next three games to wrap up her fifth Wimbledon crown and 14th Grand Slam title. And, she goes home with the top singles prize of £1,150,000. Congratulations and well done to Serena.

A day before the women's finals on Friday, both Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska spoke to the press.

Serena Williams - Interview Answers before Wimbledon 2012 Final

On whether she feels like the favorite in the final...
"No. I have to go out there and win. Agnieszka has had a better year than I have. She's been way more consistent than me. She's done really well, so she's ranked higher than me - she deserves to be. I have to fight for this. This is by no means going to be easy. Never, ever do I underestimate any opponent.

"I really like Aga. She's a great girl. I wish her the best for Saturday."

On what it would mean to get her Wimbledon title back...
"Oh, my gosh, it would mean a lot to me. But I have to get there."

On whether all her doubles matches this week will tire her out...
"It would be good to have a day off, but it's also good to practice in doubles because I get a lot of match play, practice some returns and serves."

On her mindset right now...
"Just positive, live for the moment. The past is the past. Any match I've won in the past is in the past. It's important for me to think like that because I tend to dwell on things, like I didn't do that so well, I didn't do this so well."

On her loss to Stosur in last year's US Open final...
"That was tough for me. I had played a lot of matches going into that - not more than I did here, but I was really tired. I really tried. Also I had just come back from a year off, so I think ultimately it was a really great effort for me. I don't know why I was such a heavy favorite. Maybe because I had such a great summer. But I was just happy to make it that far. I mean if you look at where I'd come from, after Wimbledon I was ranked close to 200 - I fought back.

"So that's the one loss I didn't beat myself up over because I felt like, 'Serena, look how far you've come, and look how far you'll continue to go.'"

On her dad's recent comments that a few years ago there was a time she thought she would never play tennis again...
"It was more or less like I wasn't even thinking about tennis. I just wanted to make it through everything I was going through and become a survivor - I've been able to do that. I've been through so much in the past year or two years it's unbelievable. But if you just keep keeping on, you can do it."

Agnieszka Radwanska - Interview Answers before Wimbledon 2012 Final

On the illness she has picked up the last few days...
"Unfortunately I have picked up an upper respiratory illness, which is affecting my nose and throat. I have been playing a lot of matches here in the rain and cold wind, and I haven't been well for a few days. The most important thing is that I'm feeling good on the court and playing some good tennis, despite not being able to talk much away from the court. The priority is my singles match tomorrow, so I will do whatever it takes to make sure I'm ready to play the best I can. It was unfortunate that the illness meant I had to withdraw from doubles. Of course, it is always a good sign to be playing singles and doubles in the second week of a Grand Slam, but I wasn't able to continue in both events."

On having to leave her post-semifinal press conference and miss her pre-final press conference with the illness...
"As everyone could see, I wasn't able to complete my press conference yesterday. I was really hoping I would have improved overnight so I could come in to finish my press today, but unfortunately I can't speak for very long, and so I have done as much as I can do today. I'm very sorry about that."

On playing Williams...
"We have played a couple of times a long time ago. It's going to be another challenge, especially here on grass. She's playing amazing tennis at the moment. I don't really have much to lose, so I'll try my best and we'll see."

On potentially becoming No.1...
"Everyone dreams when they are a kid about becoming No.1, so I'm very happy to have a chance to play for the top ranking. But there is still one very tough match to go. I will do everything in my power to perform well and win. I'm really happy that I've been able to improve my ranking so much this year. I think this is the best two weeks of my career, playing my first Grand Slam final and achieving a career-high ranking no matter the outcome tomorrow."

Serena Williams vs Agnieszka Radwanska: Who will win Wimbledon 2012

When the two Wimbledon 2012 women's singles finalists step at Centre Court on Saturday, at 2pm, it will not just be a battle for a Grand Slam title. World no. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland is going against world no. 6 Serena Williams of the United States for her first ever Grand Slam title, and a chance to be the top-ranked player for the first time in her career. Williams is gunning for her 14th major title, and first since Wimbledon 2010. The head-to-head between the two has Williams leading 2-0 but both their encounters were in 2008.

So Serena is an 8/1 on choice with the bookmakers to continue the Williams family's domination of the Ladies' event at Wimbledon in the 21st century. Her older sister Venus has captured the appropriately-named (in her case) Venus Rosewater Dish on five occasions and Serena will be confident of matching that if she can emphasise what she has been doing well in these Championships, which is serving aces, and minimise some of the extravagant errors which have crept into her game, particularly since she came back just over a year ago from a combination of serious injury and grave illness. To have got this far on Wimbledon's lawns once more is indeed a tribute to one whose career could so easily have been over.

Final Thoughts from Radwanska: "I played Serena a couple of times, but it was long time ago. I didn't play her I think in last few years. But it's always tough. She's a very tough opponent and hitting the ball very well. Of course she's playing great tennis on the grass. I think I don't really have anything to lose, so just going to try my best."

Final Thoughts from Williams: "I have to go out there and win. Agnieszka has had a better year than I have. She's been way more consistent than me. She's done really well, so she's ranked higher than me. She deserves to be. You know, I have to go out there and fight for this. This is by no means going to be easy. Never, ever do I underestimate any opponent. She's out there to try to do her best."

Interesting Facts about the Wimbledon 2012 singles final:

~ No Polish player, male or female, has ever won a Grand Slam title.

~ Radwanska is the first Polish player, male or female, to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open Era (she was already the first to reach a semifinal).

~ Radwanska has many other firsts for Poland: first to win a WTA title (at Stockholm in 2007), first to reach Top 10 (in July 2008), first to beat a World No.1 (beating Wozniacki at Sydney this year) and first to cross $1 million in career prize money (and she now has more than $9 million).

~ Radwanska is trying to become the fifth woman to win Wimbledon having been a junior champion, having done it in 2005 (beating Paszek in the final); the first four to achieve the feat were Jones, Susman, Hingis and Mauresmo.

~ Radwanska will break the Top 2 after this, to No.2 if she loses the final and to No.1 if she wins the final (Azarenka will be the other one in the Top 2); Williams will move from No.6 to No.4 no matter what happens in the final.

~ Williams is playing her 18th Grand Slam final (she is 13-4 in her first 17).

~ Williams is 10-0 against Top 5 players over the last year (winning them all in straight sets - and only being pushed to two tie-breaks, both by Azarenka).

~ Williams is trying to become the first 30-something to win a Grand Slam title since 1990 Wimbledon (Navratilova, who was 33 at the time).

~ With 13, Williams is in fourth place for Grand Slam titles in the Open Era (Graf leads with 22, followed by Evert and Navratilova with 18).

~ With 4, Williams is tied for fourth place for Wimbledon titles in the Open Era (Navratilova has 9, followed by Graf with 7 and Venus Williams with 5).

~ Every time the Williams sisters play doubles at Wimbledon, one of them wins the singles title (they have played doubles here eight times before and have each won the singles title four of those times - good for Serena?)

~ This will be the seventh different Grand Slam champion in a row (Clijsters, Li, Kvitova, Stosur, Azarenka, Sharapova and Radwanska or Williams); the only time there have been seven or more different Grand Slam champions in a row came between the 1977 Australian Open and 1978 Wimbledon.

Murray vs Tsonga in Wimbledon 2012 Men's Semifinal Live Online

It's Murray-mania time in the whole United Kingdom. After world no. 4 Andy Murray reached the Wimbledon semi-final for the fourth time in the past four years, all of the kingdom's morning newspapers featured the Scot in the headlines. On Friday, in the second match at Centre Court, Murray will attempt to reach a milestone by gunning for his first ever Wimbledon final against the best player from France in world no. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Watch the Wimbledon 2012 men's semifinal live online stream here.

After Murray beat world no. 5 David Ferrer to book his place in the last four earlier this week, the look of relief and delight that spread over Andy Murray’s face on Wednesday night said it all. Now he could allow himself a little smile. Now he could admit that the draw had opened up for him. Now he did not have to play world no. 2 Rafael Nadal. Ever since Nadal packed his bags and headed for home in the second round, Scotland’s finest has been telling anyone who would listen – and very few would as Andymonium started to build – that the stunning upset made not one jot of difference to him. It would only affect his challenge for the title if he reached the last four – and he did that on Wednesday evening with a lung-bursting marathon of a match to beat David Ferrer 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (4).

That said, the draw has still only opened up a bit: he may not be playing the former champion but he still has to find a way to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the world No.6, on Friday. It is not as if Rafa left a ticket to the final pinned on Murray’s locker door before he caught the first flight back to Manacor. The fact that Murray leads the Frenchman 5-1 in career meetings will give him some comfort but this is still a Grand Slam semi-final; from now on, the form book means nothing – it is who has the heart and the nerve to take their chances that matters.

Heading into their semifinal encounter, Murray will be the favorite. He leads Tsonga 5-1 in their career head-to-head series, including wins at 2010 Wimbledon and the 2011 AEGON Championships final. Murray is attempting to become the first British man to reach the Wimbledon final since Henry "Bunny" Austin in 1938. The last British man to lift the title was Fred Perry, two years earlier. Murray has a 0-3 record in Grand Slam championship finals losing once at the US Open final and twice at the Australian Open.

Tsonga’s best major championship result came at the 2008 Australian Open, where he finished runner-up to world no. 1 Novak Djokovic. Last year at Wimbledon, he lost to Djokovic in the semi-finals. The last Frenchman to reach the Wimbledon final was Cedric Pioline in 1997. Yvon Petra was France’s last titlist at the All England Club in 1946. Tsonga reached his second straight Wimbledon semifinal into the Wimbledon semi-finals for a second straight year on Wednesday with a hard-fought 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 victory over No. 27 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

Who will reach his first ever Wimbledon final? Watch Wimbledon 2012 men's semifinal live online stream featuring Murray vs Tsonga.

Wimbledon 2012 Mens Semifinal Live: Djokovic vs Federer

>> Thursday, July 5, 2012

There is plenty at stake when world no. 1 Novak Djokovic meets world no. 3 Roger Federer in the Wimbledon 2012 men's singles semifinals. If Djokovic loses, Federer will be the first ever player to reach eight Wimbledon finals. Furthermore, it provides the opportunity for Federer to supplant Djokovic at the top of men's tennis world rankings, a position he hasn't held since May 2010. This will only happen if Federer wins his seventh Wimbledon title, tying Pete Sampras with the most Wimbledon wins. Watch Wimbledon 2012 men's semifinal live online stream featuring Djokovic vs Federer here.

Federer is already assured of supplanting Rafael Nadal as the world no. 2 after the rankings will be released next Monday. The pair will be meeting for the 11th time at a Grand Slam championship when they take to court on Friday. Both have split their last 10 meetings in Grand Slams but it was the Serbian who has had recent success winning semifinal encounters in last year's US Open and this year's Australian Open. In their over-all career head-to-head, Federer leads 14-12 but it was Djokovic who has emerged victorious in their previous two meetings this year in Melbourne and Rome.

For Federer, a return to the top ranking will mean that he will equal Pete Sampras' 286 weeks at no. 1, and due to top players inactivity in the week after, he is also expected to break that tie in a record that looks to stand for a very long time. Many tennis fans and observers believe that Federer deserves that world record as he also is the player with the most Grand Slams and whose dominance in tennis was unparalleled in the Open era. Still, Djokovic is expected to battle well and with his previous form, will not go down easily even in the tournament that Federer has owned as his personal playground. Djokovic is aiming to be the first repeat winner at Wimbledon since Federer did the same in 2007.

When asked about potentially losing the World No. 1 ranking to Federer, Djokovic said, "When you're playing at this stage of a Grand Slam against one of your biggest rivals, there is a lot of things involved, a lot of things on the line. It's not the first time that I'm playing to win or lose a ranking. It's not something that I think about too much. I really just want to focus on the match."

Djokovic added, "It is a challenge when you play Roger and Rafa or any of the top players. Roger has been on the top of the men's game for so long. This is where he won six titles. He definitely wants to prove himself and to everybody else that he can win it once again... We [have] never played on grass, so we'll see how that is going to turn out. He has a really smart game for this surface. But I [have] improved playing on grass in last couple of years. I won the title here last year, got to another semi-final this year, so I'm feeling good about this surface, about myself on the court. I really have nothing to lose."

Come Friday, expect the tennis world to be tuned in to the Centre Court at Wimbledon as both players step into the court for their 1pm semifinal date. Watch Wimbledon 2012 men's semifinal live online stream featuring Djokovic vs Federer. May the best man win.
