Martina Hingis wedding pictures were published in a German online publication on Monday - December 13, 2010. The SCHWEIZER-ILLUSTRIERTE Online website featured a photo gallery of Martina Hingis and her husband, Thibauld Hutin, some pictures of which were taken during their "secret wedding" in Paris. Hingis, at age 30 is six years older than her husband who is 24. She will retain her family name. They would like to start a family family in a year or two. The couple have indicated that they would like to settle in Switzerland.

The wedding was celebrated by a small family reception held at the Presidential Suite of Paris's Hotel George V. A wedding banquet is apparently being scheduled for the spring of 2011. The newlyweds are expected to honeymoon in the Maldives.

Hingis and Hutin met at a show-jumping competition in April this year. Hingis has been engaged to marry more than once - first to tennis player Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic and to Swiss attorney Andreas Bieri.

Hingis was a former #1 in women's tennis and she has lifted 5 Grand Slam trophies including the 1997 Wimbledon title. She retired from professional tennis at the age of 22 in 2002 due to injuries. She made a comeback in 2005 but was forced to retire again in 2007 after a failed drug test. She has won 43 WTA singles titles, and has won nine Grand Slam titles in doubles.

Google: Top 10 Most Searched Women Tennis Players for 2010

>> Thursday, December 2, 2010

A woman tennis player currently ranked #165 in the tennis rankings is the most searched woman tennis player in 2010 based on Google search volume index. Sania Mirza, India’s most famous sportswoman, beat out more accomplished tennis players such as 13-time Grand Slam titlist Serena Williams, WTA player of the year Kim Clijsters, and world #1 Caroline Wozniacki. Mirza was heavily searched during her April marriage to Shoaib Malik, the former Pakistan cricket captain, and the tumultuous build-up to the event. Pakistan, India, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Poland were the top 5 countries where Mirza was searched.

most searched women's tennis players

Last year’s most search woman tennis player, Serena Williams is in second spot behind Mirza. The former world #1 player barely played this year, but her searches peaked in January and July – when she won her 12th and 13th Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, respectively. Williams has not played a WTA tournament since Wimbledon due to a knee injury and has just announced recently that she will not defend her Australian Open title in Melbourne this coming January. Top countries searching for Serena Williams are India, United States, Australia, Belgium, and Canada.

3-time Grand Slam champion and advertising star Maria Sharapova is the third most search tennis player. Peak searches for Sharapova were during her Australian Open campaign (lost in the first round to Maria Kirilenko), her US Open campaign (lost to Wozniacki in fourth round), and her October
engagement to basketball player Sasha Vujacic. Top countries searching for Sharapova are Pakistan, the Philippines, India, Morocco, and Malaysia.

World #4 and 7-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams and tennis glamour girl Anna Kournikova are the fourth and fifth most searched women tennis players. Venus was most searched in South Africa, the United States and Australia while Kournikova was most searched in India, Finland and Australia. Rounding out the top 10 most searched women tennis players are former #1 Ana Ivanovic (#6), current world #1 Caroline Wozniacki (#7), Chinese player Na Li (#8), WTA player of the year and US Open champion Kim Clijsters (#9), and WTA comeback player of the year Justine Henin (#10).

Which is more popular - Men's Tennis or Women's Tennis?

>> Wednesday, December 1, 2010

Google Trends is showing that based on Internet traffic, the ATP tour website is more popular than the WTA tour website. In the past 12 months, Google Trends data shows that the number of unique visitors to the www.atpworldtour.com website, the official website of the ATP Tour, is more than twice as much as the number of unique visitors to www.wtatour.com - the official website of the WTA tour. See graph below. Of course, one may argue that website visitors may not necessarily translate to actual popularity between the two tennis tours, but its nevertheless a good indicator. What's surprising is the discrepancy. A 25% to even 50% difference between website visitors sounds more plausible, but twice as much? Then again, the WTA Tour website has considerably less content and is definitely less interactive than the ATP Tour website.

Which is more popular - Men's Tennis or Women's Tennis?

TOP 10 Countries visiting the ATP Tour website:
1. United States
2. United Kingdom
3. Spain
4. China
5. Italy
6. Japan
7. Canada
8. Argentina
9. France
10. India

TOP 10 Countries visiting the WTA Tour website:
1. Japan
2. United States
3. Denmark
4. Italy
5. United Kingdom
6. Russia
7. Serbia
8. Germany
9. Poland
10. Israel

Five observations on the countries visiting the WTA and ATP websites:

- China is more interested in men's tennis than women's tennis but not a single Chinese man is in the top 100.

- Would Denmark rank as high as #3 without Caroline Wozniacki? How about Japan? Is the interest all because of Kimiko Date-Krumm?

- I was expecting Russia to have more Internet visitors to the WTA website.

- Germany is not ranked in the top 10 for the ATP tour despite German players occupying 10 slots in the top 100 of men's tennis.

- Is Andy Murray generating more interest in tennis in the UK than Rafael Nadal is doing in Spain?
