Venus vs Radwanska, Azarenka in Roland-Garros 2012 Live Streaming Tennis

>> Wednesday, May 30, 2012

The action continues in the second round of the women's singles tournament at the 2012 French Open. A day after the shocking elimination of Roland-Garros favorite Serena Williams in the first round, world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka and world no. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska take the court to vie for third round spots and try to avoid the fate of Serena. Azarenka is the first player in action at the Court Philippe Chatrier when she takes on unseeded German Dinah Pfizenmaier. The hottest match-up however, will be the second round battle between Radwanska and the most dangerous unseeded opponent in the draw - 7-time Grand Slam titlist Venus Williams.

Venus will attempt to regain family honor but she is facing the player with the most match wins in the WTA this year in Radwanska. The pair have battled each other seven times before with Venus holding a career head-to-head lead of 5-2 ,but it was Radwanska who won their last meeting in Miami's hard-courts last March in a comfortable straight set victory. No one should overlook Venus' main strengths though - her power and athleticism is perhaps one of the best on tour and can beat anyone at any given day. Nevertheless, the Polish no. 1 has a very high degree of confidence going into the match having won a recent tune-up at the Brussels Open over the weekend. Radwanska is the slight favorite in this match-up with her recent form, but it will be no surprise to anyone if Venus wins in straight sets.

On the other hand, Azarenka will be all too keen to avoid the mishap that plagued fellow favorite Serena in her first round match. In her last outing, Azarenka lost the first set before coming back and focusing in the last two sets to beat an unseeded player. She committed numerous unforced errors to lose her first set of the tournament. Against the German qualifier Pfizenmaier, expect the top-ranked Belarussian to come out firing and she should progress to the third round untroubled and more consistent that in her last match.

In the featured women's matches in Court Suzanne Lenglen, the talented Petra Cetkovska and no. 24-seed goes up against Mathilde Johansson of France. Cetkovska made a name for herself in this year's clay season beating three top 5 players in Radwanska, no. 4 Petra Kvitova, and then no. 5 Samantha Stosur in Rome and Madrid. The French crowd will be heavily rooting for Johansson but Cetkovska will be too solid and will advance to the next round. France's best hope for a semi-finalist this year lies on the shoulders of France's no. 1 Marion Bartoli. Bartoli will play Petra Martic of Croatia in the third match at Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Two former French Open champions take to court aiming to gain entry into the last 32. No. 14-seed Ana Ivanovic, the 2008 champion goes up against Shahar Peer of Israel. Peer owns a perfect 3-0 record against Ivanovic and the Serb will aim to reverse that trend in their fourth meeting. 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, the no. 26-seed will play Yung-Jan Chan of Taiwan while 2010 finalist Samantha Stosur, the no. 6-seed, will battle rising American Irina Falconi. Also in action is new top 10 player Angelique Kerber of Germany who is aiming for a victory over Olga Govortsova of Belarus.

Federer, Djokovic Roland-Garros 2012 Live Stream Tennis

The favorites in the Roland-Garros 2012 top half of the draw spice up the show-courts on Wednesday's second round of action at the 2012 French Open. World no. 1 Novak Djokovic aims for a spot in the third round as he starts the action on Court Suzanne Lenglen against unknown Blaz Kavcic of Slovakia. World no. 3 Roger Federer, Djokovic's projected semifinal opponent tackles Romanian Adrian Ungur in the second match at the main stadium of Court Philippe Chatrier. The other featured men's match in the main court is the battle involving no. 11-seed Frenchman Gilles Simon and inspiring American Brian Baker.

Michael Llodra of France is going against no. 7-seed Tomas Berdych in Court 1 while Edouard Roger-Vasselin is up against talented clay courter and no. 9-seed Juan Martin Del Potro in Court 2. Video of Serena Crying during French Open 2012 1st Round Loss

She was many a tennis expert's pick to win her second Roland Garros title, and first in 10 years. But a Frenchwoman ranked outside the top 100 had different aspirations. Virginie Razzano played lights out tennis in dealing American Serena Williams her first ever loss at the opening of a Grand Slam tournament. In her 47th first round match, Serena lost an exciting 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 match to the inspired Razzano once ranked no. 16 in the world. Razzano, who dealt with recent tragedy after the death of her fiance was heavily supported by the partisan French crowd at Roland-Garros Court Phillipe Chatrier. Serena managed to save 8 match points before finally sending a ball out to spark a wild frenzy amongst the spectators.

Watch the video of Serena Williams crying during her French Open 2012 first round loss below. The video was taken after the second set tiebreak, and before the start of the third set. Serena Williams was up 5-1 in the tiebreak and two points away from winning what could have been a routine first rounder for the 13-time Grand Slam champion. Instead, nervous play and a never-say-die attitude from an underdog who had nothing to lose resulted in one of the greatest upsets in Grand Slam history. No, this wasn't the Serena who was struggling on clay. It was the Serena who came into the French Open with 2 clay tune-up victories and riding a 17-match winning streak on the surface. It's a reminder once again that there are no sure winners in tennis. Perhaps, only a guy named Rafael Nadal.

Sharapova, Serena in French Open 2012 Live Stream

>> Tuesday, May 29, 2012

The two main favorites to lift the Roland-Garros 2012 French Open women's singles title will be in action today, Tuesday, May 29. Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova take on unseeded opponents on their first round matches as they start their campaign to hoist this year's winners trophy. Serena is looking to add a second French Open title to her 2002 victory and increase her career grand slam total to 14. Sharapova, on the other hand, is aiming to win her first ever French Open title to complete the only Grand Slam missing from her trophy chest. Serena's first round opponent is Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano who is ranked no. 111 in the world, while Sharapova opens against world no. 78 Alexandra Cadantu of Romania.

Watch Sharapova and Serena in Roland-Garros 2012 French Open live stream tennis matches here.

Against Razzano, Serena will be playing someone she hasn't played before and a former world no. 16. She will also be going against a heavily pro-French and pro-underdog crowd, but it wouldn't be something that Serena hasn't seen before. Serena hasn't lost a first round match ever in a Grand Slam tournament and with her stellar play in the past two months winning 17 straight matches, the American should sail through this match easily. Nothing is certain in tennis however, and no matter what one has achieved in the past, there are no pushover opponents in women's tour. This is evidenced by world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka's hard earned three-set come-from-behind win to reach the second round. The Serena-Razzano match is the fourth and last match to be played at Court Philippe Chatrier for the day.

Sharapova's first round encounter with Cadantu is also their first time to meet at any WTA tennis tournament. Though Cadantu is playing in only her second Grand Slam, expect the world no. 2 to come out firing and not taking any chances against a lowly ranked opponent. The Sharapova-Cadantu match is going to be played as the second match in Court Suzanne Lenglen. Though Sharapova has "only" reached the semi-finals of the French Open twice, she is aiming to win the title this year and complete her Grand Slam collection as she previously won a title each at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. Sharapova's tune-up for this year's French Open has included two tournament wins in Stuttgart and Rome, and a quarterfinal loss to Serena in Madrid.

Several other seeded players are competing for a slot in the next round. No. 14-seed Francesca Schiavone will take on unseeded Kimiko Date-Krumm in the first match at Court Philippe Chatrier. Schiavone has reached the French Open finals two times in a row, winning in 2010 but losing to Li Na in 2011. Though her results have faded considerably in the past year or so, it is noteworthy to mention that she won her first WTA title just last week at Strasbourg after several months of not winning any tournament champion's trophy. Wimbledon champion and world no. 4 Petra Kvitova will face Ashleigh Barty of Australia for her first round match, and it scheduled as the first match at Court Suzanne Lenglen. In Court 1, former world no. 1 and now no. 9 Caroline Wozniacki will battle veteran Eleni Daniilidou for a second round spot.

Nadal, Murray in Roland-Garros 2012 Live Stream

>> Monday, May 28, 2012

The third day of action is all set for Tuesday, May 29 as the heavy favorite to win the men's title take to court to close the last day of first round matches in this year's Roland-Garros 2012 French Open grand slam. World no. 2 Rafael Nadal is the third match featured in the main court - Court Philippe Chatrier - as the Spaniard starts his bid for a record 7th French Open title against the unfortunate Simone Bolelli of Italy. The highest seeded player in Nadal's half of the draw, world no. 4 Andy Murray is also scheduled to play on Tuesday against Tatsuma Ito of Japan at the Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Watch Nadal and Murray live in action at Roland-Garros 2012 French Open through live stream here.

Other ATP seeded players featured on Tuesday's first round are no. 8-seed Janko Tipsarevic who is going against veteran American Sam Querrey in a potential upset. Tipsaveric hasn't been playing well on his previous clay court tournaments. Clay court specialist and no. 13-seed Juan Monaco of Argentina starts his French Open campaign against Guillaume Rufin of France. Monaco won the Houston clay court event in April is considered a dark horse at Roland Garros due to his strong clay court affinity. The man expected to challenge Murray for a place in the semi-final at his section of the draw, no. 6-seed David Ferrer is also scheduled to play his first round match on Court 2 against Lukas Lacko of Slovakia.

A couple of French players who are seeded were elevated to perform in the show courts in Roland-Garros over higher seeded players. No. 17-seed Richard Gasquet is the second match featured in Court Philippe Chatrier against Jurgen Zopp of Estonia. No. 29-seed Julien Benneteau is scheduled to play Mischa Zverev of Germany in the third match at Court Suzanne Lenglen. The full list of Tuesday's schedule of play is indicated below:

French Open 2012 Odds: Nadal, Serena are Favorites

Who are the bookmaker's favorites to lift the Roland-Garros 2012 French Open trophies this year? As the second Grand Slam of the year started today, the betting game is on as well. Six-time French Open champion and world no. 2 Rafael Nadal is the heavy favorite to win the men's singles title while 13-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams is the top pick to win the women's singles title. Nadal is aiming to be the first male player to win seven Roland-Garros titles while Serena is going for a second French Open crown to add to her 2002 victory. Listed below are the other men and women's tennis hopefuls according to a variety of online bookmakers.

Roland Garros 2012 Nadal's Main Challengers - Djokovic, Federer: World no. 1 Novak Djokovic is Nadal's primary challenger for the title. The winner of the past three major titles at Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open, Djokovic is going for an achievement that hasn't been done since 1969. He is aiming to be the first male tennis player to hold all four grand slam titles at the same time in more than 40 years. Djokovic is in the other side of the draw from Nadal but he is in the same half as Nadal's second main challenger - Roger Federer.

Federer has beaten Djokovic in last year's French Open semifinals and has looked very solid in the past eight months which included winning an ATP league leading four tournaments this season. While he won the Madrid clay event three weeks ago, Federer accomplished that without facing either Nadal and Djokovic. However, his first meeting on clay this year with Djokovic ended with the Serb scoring a straight set victory.

French Open 2012: Men's Darkhorses: Bookmakers have listed Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych, and Juan Martin del Potro as darkhorses for the men's singles titles this year. The weakest player in this batch is undoubtedly world no. 4 Murray. While the top-ranked UK player reached the men's semi-finals last year, his performance this year has been suspect on clay and he failed to advance to a single semi-final in three clay court events. The others - Ferrer, Berdych and Del Potro all had a strong clay court season this year and though one of them maybe able to bring down one of the Big Three, it is highly unlikely that they'll be able to win matches in a row against the three top favorites to win the French.

French Open 2012 Serena's Main Challengers - Azarenka, Sharapova: As with the men's, the top-ranked Victoria Azarenka is only the second favorite to lift the title behind Serena, according to bookmakers. Azarenka is on the top half of the draw and will not face a strong French Open favorite until possibly the finals. On the other side of the draw where Serena was placed, world no. 2 Maria Sharapova is handed the toughest quarterfinal assignment as she could meet Serena in the final eight. This is a course of concern for Sharapova as she had been beaten soundly by Serena in their last two meetings. In fact, Sharapova hasn't beaten Serena since 2004.

Roland Garros 2012 - Women's Darkhorses: While Azarenka and Sharapova are the main challengers for Serena's quest for a second French Open title, a group of talented players are the bookmaker's favorites as tournament darkhorses. Included in this group of players are defending champion Li Na, current US Open champion Samantha Stosur, current Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, and Agnieszka Radwanska, the world no. 3 who holds the most match wins with 36 in the WTA this year. Like with the men's, it is possible that any of these players can outplay Serena, Sharapova and Azarenka in any given time. However, it would be difficult to imagine any of these players beat the top three favorites in two consecutive matches.

Serena will win French Open 2012 - Tennis Experts

>> Sunday, May 27, 2012

For the first time since 2007 when Justine Henin made the clay courts at Roland-Garros her personal playground, this year's French Open 2012 is not as wide as it had been in the past four years or so. In fact, based on the clay court results in the past two months - it is with great certainty that the French Open title will be hoisted by three women at the end of the fortnight. It would be a surprise indeed, a great upset even, if Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka or Maria Sharapova will not be lifting the trophy on June 9. But, with tennis and women's tennis in general, one interesting aspect of the game is the uncertainty of the results.

This year however, there seems to be some order creeping back into the WTA tour. For starters, Azarenka won four titles to start the year, winning her first Grand Slam in Melbourne and taking over the world no. 1 ranking. She went on a 26-match winning spree beating world no. 2 Maria Sharapova in the finals of the Australian and Indian Wells, and dominating the other successful player this season in Agnieszka Radwanska. Azarenka seemed poised to continue her domination of the clay court circuit but things took an interesting twist.

Two former no. 1 players and multi-Grand Slam winners entered the picture. 13-time major titlist Serena Williams overwhelmed a Charleston field and defeated both Azarenka and Sharapova in straight sets to win the Charleston and Madrid clay court events on her way to a perfect 17-0 winning streak on clay so far. Her minor hiccup was a withdrawal against French Open defending champion Na Li prior to their scheduled semifinal in Rome. The reason? A recurring back problem caused Serena to withdraw as not to jeopardize her ability to peak for the second Grand Slam of the season. Serena has always been vocal in her desire to add another French Open trophy to the one she won 10 years ago. This year, she seems to have mastered clay and intimidated opponents in the surface.

So then, with Serena showing her resolve of old, tennis experts from ESPN and CNN Sports Illustrated are predicting a 14th Grand Slam title for the American in her least favorite surface. In his French Open women's seed report, Jon Wertheim of CNN remarked: "Can we pause and acknowledge how remarkable it is that, a full decade after her lone French Open title, Williams is still going this strong? Again and again you'll hear, "When she's motivated and healthy, she is the best in the world." But truth is truth. It says here that Serena gets back in the winners' circle."

His counterparts at ESPN agree. Eight of twelve tennis experts picked her to win her second Roland-Garros trophy. The other four picks were distributed to Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, Agnieszka Radwanksa, and Samantha Stosur. Sharapova is actually a good pick being the only other player other than Serena to win two clay court events this spring. The Russian world no. 2 defeated Azarenka convincingly in the Stuttgart finals and also edged out reigning French Open champion Li Na to defend her title in Rome. As for Kvitova, Radwanska and Stosur, it's unclear how the other experts would pick those three considering their results in the tune-up tournaments.

What's strange about the ESPN's tennis experts picks is the absence of someone picking Azarenka. The world no. 1, if healthy, has the tools and confidence to win a second straight slam and the draw has been kind to her. Azarenka is drawn to meet Radwanska in the semifinals, a player she has beaten six times already this year. She however, must get past Stosur, a former French Open finalist, in the quarterfinals. Still, it is no question that Azarenka's draw is easier than that of Serena, who was dealt the toughest draw of all.

Serena could end up playing former world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, Sharapova, and Li or Kvitova just to reach the finals. She has beaten Wozniacki and Sharapova on clay this year, but hasn't played against Li or Kvitova. The quarterfinal with Sharapova may very turn out to be the de-facto final. Whatever the case may be, a win by Serena, and to a lesser extent, wins by Sharapova and Azarenka, could make the WTA a more exciting product in the months to come.

ATP Men's Tennis Rankings as of May 28, 2012

>> Saturday, May 26, 2012

The ATP men's tennis rankings were released earlier than normal after the conclusion of this week's Open de Nice Côte d’Azur 2012 in Nice, France. Third-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain defeated qualifier American Brian Baker to win his 12th ATP title, all on clay court events. The win helped Almagro exchange places with Gael Monfils of France as Almagro one spot higher in the only movement within the top 20. As for Baker, he jumped 75 spots to a career-high ranking of no. 141. Baker is the USTA's representative as the American wildcard in this year's French Open.

In the 2012 ATP Rankings Race To London, the top three players in Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer maintained the top three positions and all three are close to each other in the rankings. This could very well change after the French Open which Nadal is the heavy favorite to win. Almagro's title in Nice allowed him to move to the no. 8 spot bumping Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga down to no. 9. See the list below for the ATP top 20 men's tennis rankings and race to London.

Tennis Experts pick NADAL to win record 7th French Open

The good thing about predicting Grand Slam tennis winners - is that the predictions may be totally out of whack or spot on. Then again, that's the interesting part of tennis, anything can happen. ESPN's group of 12 select tennis analysts, writers and editors published their predictions with regards to which player will win the Roland-Garros 2012 French Open grand slam. In the men's side, 11 of the 12 experts picked Rafael Nadal to win a record setting 7th French Open title. There was only one vote for Novak Djokovic to complete a rare Novak Slam - a feat last achieved in 1969 when tennis legend Rod Laver won all four majors in the same year.

Who can blame the experts for choosing Nadal? The Spanish world no. 2 has a ridiculous record at the French Open losing just one fluke match and winning six titles in seven attendances. More importantly, Nadal was dominant in this year's clay court season while last year, he appeared vulnerable against the onslaught of a Djokovic 43-match winning streak which included victories over Nadal in Madrid and Rome. This year, Nadal has clearly hit his stride winning Monte-Carlo, Barcelona and Rome, and he defeated the world no. 1 in two of three finals, both wins came in straight sets.

The only bleep in Nadal's preparation was a round of sixteen loss to fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco at the much maligned blue courts in Madrid. If anything, that loss actually helped Nadal as he got some much needed personal rest. Much as Nadal is known for his endurance, four victories on clay in five weeks may not actually be good for his health. In 2009, a visibly weaker Nadal was sent packing home in the fourth round as he failed to adjust his game against Robin Soderling in what until now is his only Roland-Garros loss in forty-six matches.

This year, Nadal has a relatively easy path to the semi-finals. His third round opponent could be no. 32 seed Florian Mayer, and his fourth round challenger may be the winner of the third round match between no. 13-seed Juan Monaco and no. 19-seed Milos Raonic. His quarterfinal opponent could very well be fellow Spaniard and no. 12-seed Nicolas Almagro. No. 8-seed Janko Tipsaveric is Nadal's highest potential quarterfinal opponent but the Serb has struggled in recent months to win back-to-back matches. In the semi-finals, world no. 4 Andy Murray or no. 6-seed David Ferrer could be waiting for Nadal. Then again, Nadal should easily advance to the finals against either players.

The other side of the draw, the top-half is trickier for Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer - the two players expected to challenge Nadal for his quest of yet another French Open title. Djokovic has drawn no. 14-seed Fernando Verdasco as his potential quarterfinal opponent, and he could be in the quarterfinal against the winner of France's top two players in no. 5-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and no. 11-seed Gilles Simon. As for Federer, he is in the same section of the draw as no. 7-seed Tomas Berdych and no. 9-seed Juan Martin del Potro. Both players are tough clay court opponents with Del Potro winning this year's title in Estoril and Berdych almost beating Federer in the Madrid final.

As for the other tennis predictions, tennis experts are looking for the following players to do some damage and live beyond their seeding in this year's French Open - Simon, French no. 3 Richard Gasquet, Raonic, top-ranked American John Isner, and Stanislas Wawrinka.

WTA Women's Tennis Rankings as of May 28, 2012

The WTA women's tennis rankings were released early today after the conclusion of the Brussels Open 2012 and the Internationaux de Strasbourg 2012 tennis tournaments. World no. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland captured her third title of the season in Brussels, while former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone won her first WTA tour title since her Roland Garros win two years ago in Strasbourg, France. The new rankings didn't have any changes in the top 10 but some minor movements happened in the top 20.

Schiavone moved up two spots to no. 12 causing a downward movement in the rankings of Sabine Lisicki and Ana Ivanovic. Both players moved down one spot each and Lisicki is now no. 13 while Ivanovic is now at no. 14. Top ranked Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova, Radwanska, Petra Kvitova and Serena Williams remain in the top 5. This ranking will next change after two weeks when the results of the Roland Garros 2012 French Open grand slam gets included. At this point, both Radwanska and Sharapova can overtake Azarenka for the top title but it will only happen if Azarenka loses early and either Sharapova and Radwanska wins the title.

In the race to the WTA championships, Radwanska inched closer to the no. 2 position held by Azarenka. The runner-up finish of Romania's Simona Halep allowed her to reach the top 20 at no. 19. Check below for the women's tennis singles rankings as of May 28, 2012 as well as the women's 2012 race to the WTA championships.

Brussels Open 2012 Prize Money: Radwanska earns $107K for 10th Title

World no. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska won her 10th WTA title on Saturday at the Brussels Open 2012 in Bruxelles, Belgium. Radwanska edged unseeded Simona Halep in a closely contested first set before pulling away to register a 75 60 victory to add to her Dubai and Miami titles won earlier in the year. With the win, Radwanska earned the top $107,000 prize money and 470 ranking points. As runner-up, Halep won $57,000 in prize money and 320 ranking points. The losing semi-finalists - no. 8-seed Kaia Kanepi and unseeded Sofia Arvidsson both earned $30,500 in prize money and 200 ranking points. This is the second year that the WTA premier-level Brussels Open is being held and because of its proximity to the French Open, a lot of top players skipped this tune-up tournament.

It was a very good week for the top-seeded Radwanska who didn't lose a set en route to the final. Halep actually served for the first set at 5-4 - but Radwanska rolled from there, winning nine games in a row, and the last 10 points. With the win, Radwanska now has 36 match wins for the year, the most for any WTA player. World no. 1 Victoria Azarenka is second with 35 wins. "On clay I think I need longer to warm up, not just the five minutes before the match," Radwanska said afterwards. "At the end I won nine games in a row - it was a good comeback, I think. And it's always great to win a tournament. I'm happy to get some good preparation in ahead of the French Open."

The victory moved Radwanska past the $2 million mark in terms of year-to-date prize money won. She is no. 3 in the list behind Azarenka who has $4.5 million and no. 2 Maria Sharapova who has won $2.7 million. Halep's earnings moved her to no. 40 in the prize money rankings this year with a total of $218,132.

Nice Open 2012 Prize Money: Almagro earns €72K for 2nd Title

Nicolas Almagro of Spain put an exclamation mark to his preparations for this year's Roland Garros 2012 French Open major by defending his title at the 2012 Open de Nice Côte d'Azur in Nice, France. The no. 3-seed defeated American qualifier and world No. 216 Brian Baker 6-3, 6-2 in 70 minutes to end the latter's dream run to his first ever ATP final. Almagro has now won 12 ATP titles and improved his record to 12-5 in ATP tournament final matches. This also marks his third time to defend a title after doing the same in the Valencia Open in 2006-07 and the Abierto Mexicano Telcel at Acapulco in 2008-09. The 26 year old Spaniard received €71,900 in prize money and 250 ranking points, while Baker took home €37,860 and 150 points.

The win in Nice is Almagro's second title for the season after also lifting the crown in Sao Paulo, Brazil earlier this year. He also reached the finals at Buenos Aires before falling down to fellow Spaniard and world no. 6 David Ferrer. Almagro was seeded third in this tournament behind American John Isner and Gilles Simon of France. Almagro dominated the tournament and won the title without the loss of a set. He now improves his record to a still perfect 8-0 in the tournament. In an interview, Almagro said "I am very happy with my serve and my forehand. I moved on the court very, very well. Today, was one of those matches you want to keep in your mind for the rest of the season, because I couldn't have played much better. Today was amazing. I am happy with my form, my tennis and my team. We will aim to keep working hard, so I play, in future, as I did today."

Baker became the ninth player this season trying to capture his first ATP title and also the ninth player to fail in doing so. He was also trying to become the first American to win a title this year as the only final appearances by Americans were when John Isner reached the title matches in Indian Wells and Houston. Still, it's been a fairy-tale run for Baker as he reached his first ever ATP title after failing to go beyond the second round in an ATP-level event before this tournament. With his performance this week, Baker will rise to a career high ranking within the world's top 150 players, and he also more than doubled his prize money for the season.

With the win, Almagro will overtake Janko Tipsaveric as no. 10 in this year's prize money leaders list. In the ATP 2012 singles race to London rankings, Almagro will pass Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to rise to the no. 8 position. See the lists below.

Brussels Open 2012 Finals Match Highlights: Radwanska beats Halep

05/26 Update: Radwanska wins Brussels Open 2012 finals for 10th WTA title. Watch the following match highlights: Brussels: Shot Of The Day (Saturday) | Finals Match Highlights | Finals Highlights 2 | Finals Preview: World no. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska is very close to winning her third title of the season as she beat Kaia Kanepi in the semifinals of the Brussels Open 2012, 76(8) 63. Radwanska is using this ill-timed tournament as her final tune-up for the Roland-Garros 2012 French Open grand slam which starts tomorrow, May 26. With her win, she now has tied world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka with a WTA-leading 35 wins this year. She will be fighting it out with Simona Halep who advanced to the final by defeating fellow unseeded player Sofia Arvidsson, 64 63.

Watch the finals of the Brussels Open 2012 live online here featuring Radwanska vs Halep. This tennis tournament is played on red clay and is classified as WTA Premier, a level below the Grand Slams. The total prize money for the tournament is $637,000 with the winner taking home $107,000 in prize money and 470 ranking points while the runner-up earns $57,000 in prize money and 320 in ranking points.

Despite being a premier tournament, most of the top players skipped attendance due to the bad timing of the tennis tournament. Held a week just before the start of the second grand slam of the year, only four top 20 players showed up to play earlier in the week. World no. 7 Marion Bartoli was eliminated in the second round losing to qualifier Urszula Radwanska, Agnieszka's younger sister. Halep defeated the other top 20 players - world no. 17 Dominika Cibulkova and no. 20 Jelena Jankovic on her way to the final. Other top 20 players - world no. 11 Angelique Kerber and no. 19 Roberta Vinci initially signed up to participate but withdrew due to a low back injury and a right wrist injury, respectively.

For Radwanska, it was not a smooth start as No.8 seed Kanepi's massive serves and groundstrokes helped her build a 5-1, two-break lead in the first set; but the No.1-seeded Radwanska shifted gears from there, winning five of the next six games to push the first set to a tie-break, then saving two set points there to close the set out. Radwanska would rally from 2-0 down in the second set too. As for Halep, this is her third WTA final but first on a premier-level tournament. Halep's first two WTA finals came at the smaller International-level clay court event in Fès in 2010 and 2011, both of which ended up in straight set losses to Iveta Benesova in 2010 and Alberta Brianti in 2011, respectively.

Radwanska beat Halep handily in their only previous meeting at the round of 32 in the 2011 Australian Open where she scored a 6-1 6-2 victory. Watch the Brussels Open 2012 finals live online featuring Radwanska vs Halep through TennisTv.com.

Nice Open 2012 Live: Almagro vs Baker in Final

>> Friday, May 25, 2012

It's American tennis in Paris, nay Nice, as a Cinderella-like story is evolving at the 2012 Open de Nice Côte d’Azur tennis tournament in Nice, France. For the first time this year, an American male tennis player has reached the finals of a clay court event not held in the United States. And no, his name is not John Isner, nor Mardy Fish, nor Andy Roddick. In fact, he's not even ranked in the top 100. But for this week, he's playing as if he is. Brian Baker of Nashville, Tennessee has been moving through the draw, beating players ranked way higher than him, and now, he is in the finals against Spanish clay court specialist Nicolas Almagro.

Watch the finals of the 2012 Open de Nice Côte d’Azur tennis tournament in Nice, France through live video streaming here between defending champion and no. 3-seed Nicolas Almagro vs world no. 216 qualifier Brian Baker. The winner will take home €71,900 in prize money and 250 ranking points. The runner will win €37,860 in prize money and 150 ranking points.

Baker was using this Nice tennis tournament as a tune-up for his main draw appearance in the 2012 French Open. The 27-year old American won the wildcard reserved for American players in the singles main draw at Roland-Garros by winning several playoffs matches. He is in Nice to get matches in his belt before the second Grand Slam of the year and he had to win three qualifying matches to get into the main draw. Then, the unthinkable happened. Baker defeated Sergiy Stakhovsky 67(2) 64 75 in the first round before scoring his first top 15 win by upsetting world no. 13 Gael Monfils 63 76(9) in the second round.

He followed this up with a come from behind victory over Mikhail Kukushkin 46 63 76(4) in the quarterfinals, and in his last match, he saved match point to beat former top 10 player Nikolay Davydenko 67 64 62. By virtue of reaching the final, Baker will jump to a career high ranking of no. 140, and if he wins the title, he will go higher to become world no. 113. He is assured of more than doubling his prize money for the year even with a loss in the finals. Baker is the second American this year to reach an ATP final after Isner who lost in the Indian Wells and Houston finals.

Baker's opponent in the final will be 26-year old Almagro who is ranked no. 14 in the world and who has already won a title in clay at Sao Paulo earlier this year. Almagro has a 24-6 record in clay for this season and will be looking to capture his 12th ATP title. He won this tournament last year and he reached the finals without dropping a set. He dominated the no. 2-seed, Gilles Simon, in the semifinals with a 61 63 victory. He will be playing in his 17th ATP final, and he will clearly be the favorite against Baker who has never reached an ATP final before.

Roland Garros 2012: Men's Singles Draw at the French Open

05/25 12.30 PM Paris: The draw for the Roland-Garros 2012 French Open is out with defending women's champion Na Li drawing the seeds. Interest was high on how the big three in tennis - Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer - would be placed out in the draw. Nadal is aiming for a record seventh title at Roland Garros while Djokovic is aiming to be the first player in more than 40 years to hold all four Grand Slam titles simultaneously. The potential quarterfinal pairings are as follows: (1) Novak Djokovic vs (5) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga; (3) Roger Federer vs (7) Thomas Berdych; (6) David Ferrer – (4) Andy Murray; and (2) Rafael Nadal vs (8) Janko Tipsarevic. Check the full Men's Singles draw for the Roland-Garros 2012 French Open here.

05/25 8.15 AM Paris: The Roland Garros 2012 French Open men's singles tournament draw will be announced later today. While the eventual champion in the year's lone clay court hosted Grand Slam will need the beat the best of the best men's tennis players, the draw provides excitement in that it provides an unpredictable route for the eventual champion. While most tennis fans would likely want to see a showdown between world no. 1 Novak Djokovic and world no. 2 Rafael Nadal, there are certainly potential pit-falls along the way that will prevent either one of them from reaching the French Open finals.

At the men's singles draw, the following would be answered:

1. Where will world no. 3 Roger Federer be placed in the draw? There's no doubt that to make the draw balance, it would be fair to put Federer in the top half along with Djokovic. Nadal is the overwhelming favorite to win a record seven French Open titles, and these two players are possibly the two best players to challenge Nadal on clay. It would be good to have these two square it off for a chance to face Nadal in the final.

2. Will world no. 4 Andy Murray live up to being the no. 4-seed? It will depend. Murray reached the semi-final of Roland-Garros last year, but that was on the basis of a very easy draw. Murray has struggled during the clay-court season failing to reach a single tournament semi-final, and injury has slowed down any progress on clay. There are however, many talented clay court players who can eliminate Murray. Spanish veteran and no. 6-seed David Ferrer, no. 7-seed Tomas Berdych, the finalist at Madrid, and world no. 9-Juan Martin del Potro can, at any given day, knock out Murray on clay.

Roland-Garros 2012 French Open Draw - Women's Singles

05/25, 12.45 PM Paris: Six-time French Open titlist and defending men's champion Rafael Nadal was on-hand to conduct the women's singles draw for this year's Roland-Garros 2012 French Open. Of special interest was to understand how the draw would play out for Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, the two leading players in this year's clay court season. As it turns out, they were unfortunately drawn in the same quarter. The potential quarterfinal match-ups would be (1) Victoria Azarenka vs (6) Sam Stosur; (8) Marion Bartoli vs (3) Agnieszka Radwanska; (7) Li Na vs (4) Petra Kvitova; and (5) Serena Williams vs (2) Maria Sharapova. Click here for the full 2012 French Open women's singles draw.

05/25, 8AM Paris: The draw for Roland Garros 2012 French Open women's singles tournament will be announced today, Friday, May 25. There are intriguing story lines going into the French Open this year - the second Grand Slam of the year. Earlier in the season, newly ascended world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka won four straight tournaments on her way to an impressive 26-match win streak to start the year. However, she will be going into the second major of the year not as the intimidating favorite as she would probably like to be, not even among the top two favorites, but, there's no denying that she'll be one of the few players capable of winning this year's French Open.

Based on clay court results in the past two months, Azarenka would be rated a bit behind two former no. 1 players in Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams. Sharapova and Serena won the Charleston, Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome tournaments - splitting the four between the two of them. These four clay court events are the biggest tune-up tournaments before the Roland Garros major. Azarenka did reach the finals in both Stuttgart and Madrid, but she was beaten badly by Sharapova (in Stuttgart) and Serena (in Madrid).

Between Serena and Sharapova, they met once in this year's clay court season with Serena handling Sharapova a 61 63 thrashing in the quarterfinals of Madrid. Serena failed to challenge Sharapova however, at the Rome tournament, pulling out in the last minute prior to her semifinal against defending champion Na Li. She cited back pain as her reason for withdrawal causing some concern amongst Serena's fans. It most likely be a precautionary action ahead of the French Open, as Serena has indicated time and again that she was intent on adding to her lone French Open trophy which she won in 2002.

The question would be - where would Serena be placed in the women's singles draw? As Serena is seeded fifth, she could be drawn to meet either Sharapova or Azarenka as early in the quarterfinals. Here's to hoping that won't happen. It would be good to have a Serena - Azarenka semi-final, and then a Serena - Sharapova final. Watch out for the women's singles draw later in the day today to see what the potential quarterfinal, semifinal and final matches would be.

Roland-Garros 2012 French Open Women's Seeds

>> Monday, May 21, 2012

The official list of the Roland Garros 2012 French open women's seeds will only be published later this week, but it is safe to assume that the top 32 in the WTA women's rankings this week are going to be seeded. The top two ranked players in the world - Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova are going to be distributed into the top and bottom half of the draw. The next two seeds - world no. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska and no. 4 Petra Kvitova will then be randomly assigned to either the top half or the bottom half.

To achieve a more balanced draw, it may seem logical to have Radwanksa assigned to Azarenka's half, and Kvitova to Sharapova. That will ensure that the Wimbledon champion Kvitova and Australian Open champion Azarenka are in opposite sides of the draw, but it would certainly contain an imbalance of some sort as Azarenka has beaten Radwanska six times this year already. We don't want a predictable semi-final, if both players do make it that far, so let's stick to hoping that Kvitova get assigned in Azarenka's half. Besides, Sharapova has won three major titles already, and though the last one was one in 2008, it is to everyone's benefit that she be assigned in the same half as Radwanska where the Pole can have at least a realistic shot for the finals.

The next four seeds are going to be scattered opposite the four top ranked players. They are Serena Williams, Samantha Stosur, Na Li, and Marion Bartoli. This is a good bunch of players who have fifteen Grand Slams between the four of them. Bartoli, the lone player without a major in this group, is considered the weakest link although she did reach a Grand Slam final in Wimbledon 2007. It's best to assign her against Sharapova, the most in-form player of the top four. Serena, undoubtedly the favorite to win the whole thing, is best paired against Radwanska, but we don't want a Serena - Sharapova semi (that is best reserved for the finals), so we get to assign her against Kvitova.

The next two quarterfinal pairings will thus have at least a match-up of current Grand Slam champions. Between Li and Stosur, the Australian is best paired with Azarenka, and defending champion Li can be assigned to become Radwanska's quarterfinal opponent. So now, we have finalized the top eight pairings, and it comes out to be:

Top Half: Azarenka vs Stosur; Kvitova vs Serena
Bottom Half: Sharapova vs Bartoli; Radwanska vs Li

Now that we review the above, it seems that the top half is way too tough because of three current Grand Slam champions including world no. 1 plus 13-time Grand Slam champ Serena, but based on current form, this placement seem very balanced actually. The next step, assigning the no. 9 to no. 16 seeds is challenging especially with no. 9-seed and the former no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. Wozniacki and no. 10-seed Angelique Kerber are probably the best players in this group, and should be assigned to the two weakest top eight players. Kerber is best assigned to Bartoli, while Wozniacki should be assigned against Radwanska.

The two weakest links in this group, no. 11-seed Vera Zvonareva and no. 15-seed Andrea Petkovic are best matched up against the strongest players in the top 8. Both players are really in bad shape and may not even make the round of 16. Zvonareva should be positioned against Serena, and Petkovic against Sharapova. The rest of the players can be randomly assigned to Azarenka, Kvitova, Stosur and Li.

Roland-Garros 2012 starts Tuesday, May 22: Haas, Ginepri in Qualifying Action

In just a few hours, the French Open 2012 grand slam starts with live action online starting with men's qualifying first round matches. There are a total of 16 slots reserved for the hard-working tennis players who must beat three opponents before securing a precious spot in the singles main draw. The list of those participating is a mixture of old veterans and young players - some with millions of dollars and career earnings, and some with "just" a few hundred thousand. But their goal is the same - come the singles first round of the French Open this coming weekend, they want to be part of the second Grand Slam of the year.

128 players take to court to start the men's singles qualifying matches. They are organized into 16 groups of eight players each, and the top two ranked players in each group are seeded. Four of the players in qualifying are actually ranked 104 or higher according to this week's ATP tennis rankings. This means that by right, they should actually have qualified outright into the singles main draw. However, these players were not in the top 104 at the time the cut-off was made last April. The top two seeds belong to the top 100 - they are world no. 89 Marinko Matisevic of Australia and world no. 100 Matthias Bachinger of Germany. Check out the complete listing of the French Open 2012 men's qualifying top 16 seeds at the bottom of the post.

Going through the list of players in the men's qualifying round, two of them actually have been ranked in the top 15, one as high as world no. 2. Tommy Haas of Germany was once the top-ranked German in the early years of this century. In 2002, he achieved a career-high world ranking of #2. In 2001, Haas had his best year. He won 4 ATP titles, had a total of 57 matches won for the year, and earned $1.5 million in prize money. His four titles that year was the first for a German since Boris Becker won five in 1996. Overall, Haas has won a total of $10,291,792 for his whole career. Putting that in perspective, he has actually outearned Jo-Wilfried Tsonga so far, the current world no. 5.

Another player going for a slot in the men's singles main draw is Robby Ginepri. Once ranked as high as no. 15, the American has struggled with injuries in recent years. In 2005, Ginepri had his banner year. He captured his first ATP title in Indianapolis beating Andy Roddick, the top-ranked American at that time. He scored a win over world no. 4 Marat Safin on his way to the semi-finals at Cincinnati where he lost to top-ranked Roger Federer. In the US Open that year, he scored consecutive five-set wins over Tommy Haas, Richard Gasquet, and Guillermo Coria on his way to his first ever semi-final at a Grand Slam. He lost to fellow American Andre Agassi who was playing his last tennis tournament. Ginepri has won $3,691,358 in his career.

Other players to watch in this year's qualifying rounds are former top 50 players including no. 4-seed Karol Beck of Slovakia (career high ranking = 36), no. 8-seed Horacio Zeballos of Argentina (career high ranking = 41), no. 12-seed Michael Berrer of Germany (career high ranking = 42), unseeded Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan (career high ranking = 33), and Florent Serra of Italy (career high ranking = 36). Let the action begin at Roland-Garros. Best regards to all those participating in the men's qualifying rounds.
