Wimbledon 2012: 5 Shocking Results

>> Friday, June 29, 2012

As of Friday, the fifth day of competition, two top 10 seeded players in the Wimbledon 2012 men's singles draw have been eliminated and three top 10 seeded players in the women's singles draw have been beaten as well. This list is a running tab of the 5 biggest upset results in this year's Wimbledon championships. If a future result is a bigger upset, it will be added to this list. For now, here are the five biggest upsets so far:

#1. NADAL, Rafael ESP [2] lost to ROSOL, Lukas CZE 6-7(9) 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-4.

This is hands down the shock of the tournament. The 100th ranked Lukas Rosol outclassed one of the men's favorites and two-time champion Rafael Nadal in five scintillating sets. This is the worst Grand Slam result for the world no. 2 since 2005 and it comes at the heels of the Spanish record breaking seven titles at Roland Garros. In tennis, you will definitely never know what to expect. This upset result is similar in shock value to Serena William's first round upset at last month's French Open to an opponent outside the top 100.

#2. STOSUR, Samantha AUS [5] lost to RUS, Arantxa NED 6-2 0-6 6-4

Young Dutch player Arantxa Rus has now pulled off her second biggest shock victory at a Grand Slam. First it was Kim Clijsters at the 2011 French Open; this year it was Sam Stosur who was shocked as Rus claimed a strange three-set victory in a wildly see-sawing encounter on No.1 Court. Not known for her mental strength, the world No. 5 was a first-round loser in the past two years at Wimbledon, a surface that was supposed to suit her aggressive and powerful game. Still, the current US Open champion couldn't find an answer to the 21-year old from the Netherlands and has failed to advance beyond the second round in nine appearances at Wimbledon.

#3. SHARAPOVA, Maria RUS [1] lost to LISICKI, Sabine GER [15] 6-4 6-3

Top ranked Maria Sharapova just won the French Open earlier this month completing a career Grand Slam and was certainly the favorite of many coming into Wimbledon, the site of her first ever Grand Slam win. She also beat German Sabine Lisicki in last year's semifinal, and the German isn't really in the best of form if recent results were to be considered. This result is not that much of an upset if we compare the games of both players, with Lisicki packing a powerful game is she's in the zone. Still, no one would have expected Sharapova to lose before the semi-finals.

#4. BERDYCH, Tomas CZE [6] lost to GULBIS, Ernests LAT 7-6(5) 7-6(4) 7-6(4)

Tomas Berdych reached the final of the 2010 Wimbledon but two years later, he crashed in the first round. Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, ranked 87th in the world, pulled off one of the classic first-day victories at Wimbledon with a straight sets victory over the sixth-seeded Czech. Gulbis had not won a Grand Slam match since last year's US Open and his previous best at Wimbledon was to reach the second round in 2008 and 2009. Gulbis, a former promising young player who has a big game has a quarter-finals of the French Open in 2008 as his best achievement.

#5. BARTOLI, Marion FRA [9] lost to LUCIC, Mirjana CRO 6-4 6-3

In 2007, Marion Bartoli reached the final of Wimbledon losing to Venus Williams. This year, she lost to a once promising tennis prodigy who was a 15-year old semi-finalist in 1999. As a wildcard ranked No.134 13 years ago, Mirjana Lucic defeated past top-tenners Monica Seles and Nathalie Tauziat to reach the final four where she was stopped by Steffi Graf in three sets no less. Now 30 and arguably fitter and healthier than at any stage of her tumultuous 15-year career, Lucic used her booming serve and devastating power to full effect during her straight set victory.

Other Notable Upsets:

WOZNIACKI, Caroline DEN [7] lost to PASZEK, Tamira AUT 5-7 7-6(4) 6-4

It is hard to imagine that Caroline Wozniacki was the top seed two Grand Slams ago. After reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open early this year, the former world no. 1 has fallen out of the top five and couldn't take advantage of two match points in her first round match against the Austrian Tamira Paszek. In fairness, Paszek came into Wimbledon in fine form winning her first WTA premier title at Eastbourne last Saturday. Still, Wozniacki was the favored player to win with her experience and achievements.

Eastbourne 2012 Prize Money: Roddick wins €72K for Title

Sixth seed Andy Roddick continued his streak of winning an ATP title every year for the past 12 years when he dismissed reigning AEGON International champion Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-2 in Eastbourne Saturday. This title winning streak matches Roger Federer’s streak of winning at least one ATP World Tour title in 12 straight seasons. The win was a perfect Wimbledon preparation for the former world no. 1 player and earned him €72,950 in prize money and 250 ranking points. Seppi took home €38,400 as runner-up along with 150 ranking points.

“I wanted to keep alive winning one tournament a year for 12 years. I know three or four people have done that,’ Roddick said. “I need to remind myself of those numbers just to [remember] this is a what-did-you-do-last-week-type sport? So looking back on that, maybe I need to look at those a little bit more and realise that I've done this for a long time pretty well.” The American wild card won 55 per cent of his return points to break Seppi five times. Roddick clinched the trophy on his first championship point to claim victory in 72 minutes. He improved to 2-0 against the third-seeded Seppi.

“I don't remember the last time I got broken twice and won 3 and 2. I felt real good,” said Roddick. “My returns this week were close to as well as I have. I was able to close well. I started off not serving great and then made an adjustment. I think I served 90 per cent in the second set, which is a pretty strong number, especially given the conditions.”

The triumph marks Roddick’s 31st career title, with five of them coming on grass. He is the first American to finish in the winners' circle this season.
Andy Roddick won his first title in over a year when he defeated defending champion Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday to win the Eastbourne grasscourt title, a perfectly-timed boost ahead of Wimbledon.

The American, a three-time finalist at the All England Club, is aged 29 and ranked 33rd, has been troubled by injury and illness for the past several seasons but may have turned a corner with his 72-minute confidence-building win over the Italian. He came to the event as a wildcard after losing his sixth match in a row last week in an early Queen's club exit.

Roddick will be seeded 30 at Wimbledon, which starts on Monday, where he starts against Briton Jamie Baker. With the victory, Roddick rises up 8 spots to become world no. 25 when the new rankings are released on Monday, June 25. The losing semifinalists, Ryan Harrison and Steve Darcis, each won €20,805 in prize money and 90 ranking points. Roddick's victory will increase his 2012 prize money beyond $270,000 - he was at 94th place with $172K in earnings prior to the tournament.

Eastbourne 2012 Prize Money: Paszek wins $107K for Title

Tamira Paszek was the surprise winner at this year's 2012 AEGON International women's singles final when she saved five match points in downing world no. 9 Angelique Kerber to lift her first WTA premier level trophy. Her 57 63 75 victory wrapped up a week of surprises in a tournament where the top three seeded players, all ranked in the top 10, crashed in the first round of competition. Paszek then beat the two remaining seeds (no. 4-seed Marion Bartoli and no. 5-seed Kerber) in back-to-back matches to secure the third WTA title in her career. Paszek earned her biggest paycheck to date taking home the Eastbourne winner's prize money of $107,000 and 470 ranking points.

With a 2-13 record on the year and five Top 10 players in the draw, Paszek wasn't exactly the favorite for the title at the start of the week. But match by match she started getting better and better, and the talent and toughness were both on full display in the semis as she came from the aforementioned deficit to upset No.4 seed and defending champion Marion Bartoli, 46 75 64. That wasn't Paszek's last great comeback of the week, either. With four straight set wins, Angelique Kerber got up to 40 match wins on the year - the WTA's match win leader in fact, two better than Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska. And the No.5-seeded German looked headed for her 41st win as she built a 5-3 lead in the third set, and even brought up five match points.

But Paszek served them all away - three from 0-40, two more on ad out - and after a few more tight games she won, and lifted her biggest title. Paszek has a first round match at Wimbledon with Caroline Wozniacki. "Caroline's a tough opponent, former World No.1, amazing competitor - she doesn't give you a free point. So from tomorrow I will just try to do my work with Andrei, adapt my game to the courts and atmosphere of a Grand Slam again, and we will see. I will just enjoy every moment and try my best there... We've known each other since we were like 10. I have a picture. We played when we were Under 12 or something like that. On tour she has beaten me once - that was the only time we played, I think. But in juniors many times.

The victory increased Paszek total 2012 prize money to $219,179. That puts her as #54 in the money leaders this week. Kerber earned the runner-up prize money of $57,000, while Bartoli and Klara Zakopalova each took home $30,550 for reaching the semi-finals. World no. 2 Victoria Azarenka is still at the top of the list with $4.6 million prize money this year followed closely by world no. 1 Maria Sharapova who has $4.4 million.

Watch Eastbourne 2012 Women's Final Live: Kerber vs Paszek

>> Friday, June 22, 2012

A rising German star and a surprise finalist is set to battle for this year's 2012 AEGON International women's singles crown. World no. 9 Angelique Kerber is vying for her third tournament win this year while Tamira Paszek is hoping to revive a season where she lost in 11 first round matches and won only two matches prior to the start of the tournament. Watch the 2012 Aegon Internation women's final live online here featuring Kerber vs Paszek as both women go for their first ever title in Eastbourne, England. The match will start at 12 noon local time on Saturday, June 23, 2012.

While Kerber is seeded fifth, Paszek is unseeded in a tournament where the top three seeds were all beaten in the first round. World no. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska, world no. 4 and reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, and world no. 7 and former world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki all lost their opening matches. Kerber advanced to the final with a 60 63 win over Klara Zakopalova while Paszek advanced by rallying past world no. 9 and former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli to move into her very first Premier final.

Paszek, who was already in her first Premier semifinal, lost the first set then was down 4-0 in the second set and 2-0 in the third but fought back each time, eventually beating the No.9-ranked Frenchwoman in three hours, five minutes. "Early in the second set I had my chances, but with the wind things just weren't working out," Paszek said. "But I just tried to stay there. I knew I was at the same level, and that I just had to wait for my chances again. Chances came... It feels amazing to be in the final. I love Eastbourne. My godparents live here, so for me it already feels like home. It's a pleasure coming back every year."

Paszek already showed signs of her grass court prowess last year, when she made her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon. "We have a pretty green country at home, it's probably that," the Austrian joked. "No - it just suits my game, same as hardcourt. I love fast surfaces. I just enjoy the grass. It's a special atmosphere to come here and have the different shoes, and all in white." Paszek got the third Top 10 win of her career, having beaten Ana Ivanovic at Montréal in 2008 and Francesca Schiavone at Wimbledon last year.

Bartoli needed a strapping on her thigh when she trailed 2-3 in the final set. "It was a nightmare to play in these conditions, honestly," said the 2007 Wimbledon finalist. "My leg got pretty tight and then tired, but I think in two or three days it will be back to normal... I felt I had chances in almost every game and ended up losing them. In these conditions, even if I was leading, you never felt comfortable... I didn't make one ace today, where yesterday I served 10 or 12. It's really levelling when you have those kind of conditions.

Bartoli was disappointed but very gracious towards Paszek. "I lost the match so I can't really say I'm happy about it, but on the other hand I really felt like I tried my hardest and there wasn't much I could have done better," Bartoli said. "And Tamira played really well. She deserved to win. She really fought hard and came back to win the match. Of course I'm disappointed, but I tried my hardest."

As for Kerber, she won her last three matches in straight sets but unlike Paszek who beat two seeded players on her way to the final, Kerber didn't meet a single seeded player. She raced into the final taking the first seven games of her match with Zakopalova and closing the Czech out after a closer second set, 60 63. "I came here a week ago and the plan was to have a lot of matches before Wimbledon, so it feels very good," Kerber said. "I can't get any more matches than this now, so I'll just focus on my last match here and then on Wimbledon... It's my first time reaching a final on grass, and it's a big thing for me."

Kerber's win was also her 40th match win of the year, the first to cross the big 4-0 this year (Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska are next at 38). Kerber and Paszek have an identical 2-1 career record in WTA finals, though Kerber is the only one who has been to a Premier final before (winning Paris [Indoors] this year). The winner will receive $107,000 in prize money and 470 ranking points. The runner-up will take home $57,000 in earnings and 320 ranking points.

Watch Eastbourne 2012 Men's Final Live: Roddick vs Seppi

Former world no. 1 Andy Roddick is aiming to continue a streak of 12 consecutive years of winning at least one ATP tour title when he battles defending champion Andreas Seppi in the finals of the 2012 AEGON International in Eastbourne, England. Watch the live online streaming coverage here starting at 1.30 pm local time on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Roddick's best finish in the tournament is a semi-final appearance in 2001 while Seppi won the title on his fourth visit last year. Both players have met just once before in 2008 with Roddick a straight set victor during the 2008 US Open.

No. 6 seed Roddick, a wild card entry, is appearing in his first ATP World Tour final since winning his 30th title in Memphis in February 2011 (d. Raonic). The 29-year-old American is attempting to increase his ATP World Tour title streak to 12 consecutive years and match Roger Federer, who has the longest streak among active players. Roddick is 30-20 in career finals and his last grass court title came at the Queen’s Club in London in 2007. Roddick came into Eastbourne losing six consecutive matches (the longest streak of his career) and ranked No. 33 (apart from being No. 34 during this year’s Miami fortnight, his lowest ranking in almost 11 years). But he’s only dropped one set this week, that coming in the quarter-finals on Friday vs. Fabio Fognini. Americans are 0-3 in ATP World Tour finals this year and the last American winner was John Isner in Winston Salem, N.C. last August.

Prior to Eastbourne, Roddick had endured a frustrating couple of months. Sidelined since the U.S. hard court swing with a hamstring injury, he returned to action in late May to lose all three of his round-robin matches in Dusseldorf and then his following two opening matches at Roland Garros and Queen’s Club. Roddick had requested a wild card to play at this ATP World Tour 250 tournament, and benefitted from two retirements - against Sam Querrey in the first round and Steve Darcis in the semi-finals. “Hey, I'll take them how I can get them,” he said with a smile.

No. 3 seed Seppi, who had an opening round bye, has not dropped a set this week. Seppi is making his fourth career ATP World Tour final showing (2-1) and the second of the season. Last month he picked up his second career title in Belgrade (d. Paire). The 28-year-old Italian is putting together the best season of his career. He advanced to a Grand Slam-best fourth round at Roland Garros, losing to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in five sets (after winning first two sets). Afterwards he improved to a career-high No. 24. The winner will take home €71,000 and 250 ranking points, the runner-up earns €37,400 in prize money and 150 ranking points.

Wimbledon 2012 Men's Singles Draw: Djokovic, Federer in same Half

World no. 1 Novak Djokovic will try to bounce back after losing a disappointing final at the French Open by defending his Wimbledon title. He is drawn to meet a former world no. 1 in Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain in the first round. Seeded opponents he can meet before the quarterfinals are no. 28-seed Radek Stepanek and no. 15-seed Juan Monaco. He is slated to meet world no. 6 Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals. Berdych reached the semi-finals last year upsetting Roger Federer. Berdych will be challenged by no. 18-seed Richard Gasquet and no. 12-seed Nicolas Almagro in his section of the draw.

Like in the French Open, six-time Wimbledon champion and world no. 3 Roger Federer is in the same half of the draw as Djokovic. Interestingly, Federer has a chance to rise to the world no. 1 ranking if he wins the title and Serb fails to reach the final. That scenario can certainly happen with a Federer victory over Djokovic in the semi-finals, although it has been almost two years since that has happened. The Swiss has an impressive 59-7 record at The Championships. He is drawn to meet Janko Tipsaveric, the no. 8-seed, in the quarterfinals. That is, if Tipsaveric can beat no. 11-seed American John Isner in the fourth round. Isner's game on grass is especially dangerous as he possesses one of the fastest serves in the men's game.

Seven-time French Open champion and a two-time Wimbledon winner, world no. 2 Rafael Nadal heads the bottom half of the draw. He won Wimbledon in 2008 and 2010 and lost to Djokovic in last year's final surrendering his top ranking to the Serb as well. Nadal may have a potential match-up with no. 27-seed Philipp Kohlschreiber, the German who knocked him off the Halle tournament in grass last week. His potential quarterfinal opponent is world no. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Tsonga has an interesting first round opponent in former Wimbledon champion and former no. 1 player Lleyton Hewitt, a wildcard this year.

Andy Murray leads the other section of the draw in the bottom half. He is scheduled to face no. 7-seed David Ferrer in the quarterfinals, the same pairing that happened in Roland Garros with Ferrer coming out the victor and preventing a top-four semi-final. Murray will be the favorite to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon though being a much better player on grass that the Spaniard. He has three semi-final showings in the past three years, and if all elements fall into place, Murray should be able to upset Nadal and reach the finals for the first time. He'll be shooting for history, no British male has succeeded at Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936. Murray has a potential 4th round match against no. 16-seed Marin Cilic while Ferrer will most likely battle no. 9-seed Juan Martin del Potro.

Wimbledon 2012 Women's Singles Draw: Sharapova, Radwanksa in Top Half

World no. 1 Maria Sharapova is aiming for her second straight Grand Slam title, a feat she has not achieved in her career so far. But, the Sharapova will fancy her chances coming back to the major where she won her first Grand Slam at 17. The Wimbledon 2012 women's singles draw was announced last Friday, and Sharapova has a relatively easy draw into the round of 16 where she'll meet big-serving German 15th-seed Sabine Lisicki. Sharapova's possible quarterfinal opponents could be the no. 8-seed Angelique Kerber, or possibly Kim Clijsters who is currently unseeded. Clijsters and 18th-seed Jelena Jankovic will face-off in a first round meeting of former world no. 1 players.

In Sharapova's half of the draw is world no. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska. Radwanska will start against Magdalena Rybarikova in the first round before another potential second round against Venus Williams for the second Grand Slam in a row. Radwanska beat the older Williams in their second round encounter in last month's French Open and would be more challenged to do this in Wimbledon where Venus is a 5-time champion. World no. 5 Samantha Stosur looms to be Radwanska's quarterfinal opponent. Other notable players in this section of the draw include no. 11-seed Na Li, no. 20-seed Nadia Petrova, and no. 17-seed Maria Kirilenko.

The toughest quadrant of the draw features defending champion and no.4-seed Petra Kvitova and no.6-seed Serena Williams. Both players won the last three Wimbledon titles with Kvitova lifting her first major last year and Serena winning in 2009 and 2010. French Open finalist Sara Errani could be a potential fourth round opponent for Serena, while Dominika Cibulkova is Kvitova's highest possible seeded opponent in the fourth round. No. 19-seed Lucie Safarova and former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone, the no. 24-seed are players to watch in this section of the draw.

World no. 2 Victoria Azarenka is at the bottom half of the draw and would look to regain the world no. 1 ranking with her first victory at Wimbledon. Azarenka has a dangerous first round opponent in talented young American Irina Falconi and she could face former world no. 1 Ana Ivanovic, the no. 14-seed in the round of 16. Azarenka's is seeded to meet former world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals. Wozniacki has a potential fourth round match-up with 2007 finalist and no. 9-seed Marion Bartoli. ,

>> Saturday, June 9, 2012

Who will win the top prize of €1,250,000 for winning the French Open 2012 women's singles championship? Both titlists, Maria Sharapova and Sara Errani, are in the top five prize money earners this year. Sharapova is currently second behind world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka and even a win on Saturday will not be enough for her to overtake Azarenka in the prize money rankings. Errani is no. 5 on the list but can jump as high as no. 3 with a win. Errani already won the Roland-Garros 2012 doubles title and will split the €340,000 top prize with her partner. The losing finalist will take home a check of €625,000. The other semi-finalists, Petra Kvitova and Samantha Stosur earned €310,000 each.

Sharapova vs Errani French Open 2012 Women's Finals Live

Two very different players, two very different styles, one dream. When Maria Sharapova and Sara Errani step on court on Saturday, 3pm local time, both players will be aiming for the French Open 2012 women's singles title. It will be the fourth title for Sharapova completing a career Grand Slam while for Errani, it will be her first ever major win. Watch Sharapova vs Errani French Open 2012 Women's Finals live stream here. The two players have never met before but Sharapova is the overwhelming favorite. She has won two major tune-ups for the year's second Grand Slam - in Stuttgart and in Rome - although one can be argued that Errani is the most successful clay court player this year after winning three smaller clay court events in the first three months of the season.

Surprisingly, it was Errani who has beaten more impressive opponents on her way to the final. She eliminated former champions Ana Ivanovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third and fourth round stages respectively. Then, she beat two top 10 players back-to-back in Angelique Kerber and Samantha Stosur, her first top 10 wins in her career. Stosur herself was a previous French Open 2012 finalist. As for Sharapova, her only top 10 opponent was world no. 4 and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova who she beat impressively in the semi-final. See below for the players that Sharapova and Errani had to beat to reach the 2012 Roland-Garros women's singles final:

Sara Errani's Road To The Final
First Round: d. Casey Dellacqua, 46 62 62 (1:52)
Second Round: d. Melanie Oudin, 62 63 (1:14)
Third Round: d. Ana Ivanovic, 16 75 63 (2:00)
Fourth Round: d. Svetlana Kuznetsova, 60 75 (1:33)
Quarterfinals: d. Angelique Kerber, 63 76(2) (1:39)
Semifinals: d. Samantha Stosur, 75 16 63 (2:04)

Maria Sharapova's Road to the Final
First Round: d. Alexandra Cadantu, 60 60 (0:48)
Second Round: d. Ayumi Morita, 61 61 (1:00)
Third Round: d. Peng Shuai, 62 61 (1:06)
Fourth Round: d. Klara Zakopalova, 64 67(5) 62 (3:11)
Quarterfinals: d. Kaia Kanepi, 62 63 (1:14)
Semifinals: d. Petra Kvitova, 63 63 (1:17)

Former titlist Martina Navratilova is more than impressed by the 25 year old. "She hits all the right shots," she said. "She plays so well within herself, doesn't go for too much. At the very end of the match [against Stosur] she hit a couple nervous shots, and maybe beginning of the third set there was a shot that she should have made that she missed. She missed a backhand crosscourt into an open court. I was like, Wow, this is really the first shot that she missed that she should've made the whole match. Good technique, great technique. She's got that grip that works okay. Because she's short, but she can hit a high ball that way. She's got a lot of confidence now."

What is unknown is how Errani will react in her first Grand Slam final. Some players have been outstanding, such as Sharapova at 2004 Wimbledon, Ivanovic at 2008 Roland Garros, Francesca Schiavone at 2010 Roland Garros and Li Na at 2010 Roland Garros. Others such as former Roland Garros finalists Natasha Zvereva and Dinara Safina, froze when they got to the big stage. Sharapova is attempting to win a career grand Slam, which will certainly put some pressure on her, but while she has performed badly in a couple of Grand Slam finals, in particular earlier this year in the 2012 Australian Open final when she was bullied by Victoria Azarenka, that is usually because she is lacking confidence against a particular foe, rather than being overrun with nerves.

Sharapova has survived some career storms—right shoulder surgery sidelined her for nine months from 2008 to 2009, ravaging her once imposing serve and causing her ranking to plummet to No. 126. She’s rallied, but has suffered humbling thrashings in Grand Slam finals to Serena Williams, Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka. But through it all, Sharapova has never lost sight of her major dreams. When she steps onto Court Philippe Chatrier to face Sara Errani for the first time in tomorrow's French Open final, she'll be playing for more than her first Roland Garros title—she'll be playing for career-defining legacy.

Winning her first Roland Garros crown would complete the career Grand Slam and put Sharapova in rare air as one of only 10 women in history to consummate the milestone. She would also become the first Russian to master all four majors, and the first woman since Serena won the 2003 Australian Open to achieve the feat—a challenge that has eluded several elite champions, including Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Venus Williams, and Monica Seles. It would be an unprecedented crowning achievement to a committed comeback: Sharapova stands one victory away from becoming the first woman to master a major after undergoing surgery to her serving shoulder.

Whoever wins - it would be a wonderful 2012 Roland-Garros women's tournament. Watch Sharapova vs Errani French Open 2012 Women's Finals live online stream through B2LiveTV.com.

Roland Garros 2012: Nadal vs Almagro Live Online

>> Tuesday, June 5, 2012

There are three men to have reached the French Open 2012 quarterfinals without losing a single set. All are Spanish players, all are in the bottom half of the draw, and two of them are meeting each other tomorrow for a spot at the semifinals of this year's Roland-Garros tournament. World no. 2 Rafael Nadal will battle Spain's no. 3 player and no.12-seed Nicolas Almagro as Nadal continues his march to an unprecedented 7th French Open title. Watch Roland Garros 2012 live online featuring Nadal vs Almagro here. The match is the second one scheduled at Court Philippe Chatrier and the day's session starts at 2pm local time. Expect an all out clay court battle as two specialists on this surface, both hoisting the trophies in their previous tournaments, try to out-do each other for that precious final four spot.

All evidence point to a Nadal victory. The world no. 2 is a perfect 7-0 against Almagro, including 5-0 on clay, but they haven't played each other since Nadal beat Almagro in the same stage of the French Open in 2010. That match was won in straight sets by Nadal, but the first two sets were decided on tie-breaks. Nadal is going for his 50th match win in Roland-Garros where he now boasts a dazzling 49-1 record. Almagro has reached the quarterfinal stage twice before, in 2008 and 2010, and would certainly like to improve on his current 17-8 record in the tournament by reaching the semi-finals for the first time in his career.

Nadal has been in blistering form though. This is the fourth time in eight appearances at the clay-court Slam that the Spaniard has reached the quarter-finals without the loss of a set. On those previous three occasions, he went on to claim the title. Nadal had conceded just 10 games to Juan Monaco in their three other clay-court meetings, and once again dominated the 13th-seeded Argentine on Monday during their fourth round match. He allowed just two games, breaking Monaco eight times from 10 opportunities during the one hour, 46-minute match. The 19 games Nadal has lost en route to the quarter-finals are the fewest in the first four rounds of any of his Roland Garros campaigns. No player has dropped fewer games through the Round of 16 in Paris since 1982, when Guillermo Vilas lost 16 games.

Almagro, meanwhile, continued his incredible run that began in the first round of the Nice Open. Since that match, the Spanish no.12 seed has yet to drop a set, winning the tournament in the south of France and racing into the quarter-finals here. Almagro's latest victim was Janko Tipsarevic, no less, the no.8 seed from Serbia. Tipsarevic was outplayed in every part of the game by the Spaniard who must be starting to feel invincible, such is his form. Almagro was understandably delighted to reach the last eight: "Yes, of course I'm very happy. I think I played great tennis today. The day was a little bit cloudy, but now it's really sunny for me. (Smiling.) Now that win is one of the best moments of my career, and I want to enjoy and I'm very happy with my tennis."

French Open 2012: Stosur vs Cibulkova Live Stream

2009 French Open finalist and the current US Open champion, world no. 6 Samantha Stosur take to court aiming to reach her third Roland-Garros semifinal when she takes on no. 15-seed and former semifinalist Dominika Cibulkova. The Stosur-Cibulkova match will start at 2pm local time at the Court Philippe Chatrier, the grand slam's main show court. Watch the French Open 2012: Stosur vs Cibulkova quarterfinal live stream here. Stosur and Cibulkova have met once before, in the hard-courts of Stanford in 2009, and Stosur was the straight set victor that time winning 6-4 6-3.

Stosur vs Cibulkova Preview: Head-to-head: Stosur leads 1-0

Dominika Cibulkova may be the shortest player in the Top 100, but against Victoria Azarenka on Sunday she looked like a giant. For 107 minutes, Cibulkova outhit, out-thought and outfought the World No.1 to secure a thrilling upset victory and advance to the last eight in Paris for the second time in four years. Here she will meet 2010 French Open runner-up Samantha Stosur. Over the past few years, Stosur has established herself as one of the WTA's leading exponents of clay court tennis, with her trademark kick serve and big forehand propelling her to 55 wins on the surface since 2009.

Stosur's formidable weapons, lofty ranking and experience at the business end of majors see her start as favorite, but Cibulkova will not be daunted by the challenge; she holds 13 career Top 10 wins and demonstrated against Azarenka that she is certainly not afraid to fight fire with fire.

4th Round Recap: Stosur beats young American

The fourth round proved a match too far for Sloane Stephens, who succumbed to the US Open champion Samantha Stosur. The rising young American was always challenging without ever quite threatening an upset.

Stephens, 19, a new name to many at Roland Garros, is the first American teenager through to the fourth round here since a certain Serena Williams 11 years ago. She reached her first WTA semi-final, in Strasbourg, only days before the French Open began. That performance earned her a new career high ranking of 70, and she will rise into the top 60 as a result of her impressive performance in Paris this week where she did not drop a set in her first three rounds.

But Stosur was a huge jump in class for her. She rose to the challenge gamely in the first set, and came back heroically in the second when all appeared to be lost, using her backhand to full effect to break twice from 1-5 down. In the gathering twilight on Court 1, Stosur – seeded no.6 here – won 7-5, 6-4 in 83 minutes.

4th Round Recap: Cibulkova takes down Azarenka

The last time they played she had the match on her racquet, blasting forehand winners from anywhere on the court and up 61 52 at one point. She couldn't seal the deal that time but this time did - Dominika Cibulkova beat World No.1 Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round of the French Open. Just like in their fourth round match at Miami in March, Cibulkova took the role of the aggressor, using her huge forehand - and some very sharp backhands - to take control of the majority of the rallies. And it was paying off in a big way for most of the match as the No.15-seeded Slovak built a hefty 62 42 lead.

For a quick moment though, she may have started having flashbacks from Miami, as that 4-2 second set lead became 4-all, and then 5-all, then 6-all... "You can't be human if you weren't thinking about that," Cibulkova said. "Today the same thing happened: I got nervous. I wasn't going for my shots anymore... But I managed to get through these emotions. When she was 6-5 up I said, 'Hey, come on, you have to play your game and just make it.' And for the tie-break I'm very, very proud of myself that I was still going for my shots and that I made it, because she would never give me the match. I just made it."

Cibulkova ended up closing it out, 62 76(4), for her third career win over a reigning World No.1 - she beat Caroline Wozniacki twice last year. "I think she plays much better against the top players than maybe a little bit lower-ranked players," Azarenka said. "She really has that desire. I don't know what motivates her to play that way. But she's a dangerous opponent - she has had big wins before, and it was no surprise she was playing that well today."

Roland Garros 2012: Federer vs Del Potro Live Online

Two electrifying men's quarterfinal matches are on display today, June 5 Tuesday, when world no. 1 Novak Djokovic battles France's no. 1 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and world no. 3 and 2009 champion Roger Federer goes against no. 9-seed Juan Martin del Potro. Given that Roger Federer has an 11-2 career record over Juan Martin Del Potro, and that the Argentinean has not won a single set in their last five meetings, you might find the anticipation over their quarter-final meeting at Roland Garros 2012 a tad baffling. But in that case you would need to have been on Mars in September 2009 when a then 20-year-old Del Potro beat Federer in five sets to win the US Open. Watch the exciting Roland Garros 2012 quarterfinals live stream featuring Federer vs Del Potro here.

It was a victory which stunned tennis, and seemed sure to herald the start of a new phase in Del Potro’s career. Instead he picked up a right wrist injury and it has been a long climb back since he had surgery in May 2010. Last year he rose from No.485 to No.18 in seven months. Here at Roland Garros he is seeded No.9 and is carrying a left knee injury which caused him particular problems in his first round win over Albert Montanes. Del Potro insists he is "almost" back to full strength, although much of this mindset appears to rest on him simply "not thinking about (his) knee". All four of his matches so far have featured tie-breaks (three of which he had taken), and there is no doubt he will be stretched by Federer, although "Delpo" treasures the memory of their classic semi-final here three years ago where he almost took the Swiss to breaking point.

Del Potro was bothered by his heavily strapped knee in the early rounds, but gave no sign of discomfort either yesterday or today. His groundstrokes have been wreaking havoc and Roger Federer will need to bring his A-game against the former US Open champion in the quarter-final. Since missing nearly all of 2010 with a wrist injury, tennis fans have been waiting for the giant South American to get back to his devastating best. He is not there yet, but there are growing signs that the Del Potro of old is back, and the 'Big Four' may become a 'Big Five' on this evidence. Looking forward to his quarter-final with Roger Federer, Del Potro was upbeat: "I (need to) play an unbelievable match, try to take my opportunities, serve 100%, trying to play winners with my forehand, with my backhand, and put him to raise his game. I don't like to run too much, so I will try to be more aggressive than his game and looking at unbelievable shots."

No. 3-seed Federer was tested early in his fourth-round meeting with lucky loser David Goffin Sunday at Roland Garros, eventually defeating the Belgian 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4. "I thought he played really well. Great impression," praised Federer. "He took the ball early every time. Don't hit a very good shot, he can take advantage of that. He's got great potential in terms of his touch and the way he reads the game. I thought it was an interesting match... Obviously in some ways I guess it's tough for me coming out not knowing exactly what his favorite patterns are in the game, the way he serves, when he does what. But, no, he impressed me, and I enjoyed the match today."

Federer is through to his record 32nd consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final and with Sunday’s victory, tied Andre Agassi for second place overall with 36 final eight showings. He is bidding to win his first Grand Slam title since lifting his 16th major trophy at the 2010 Australian Open.

Roland Garros 2012: Djokovic vs Tsonga Live Stream

World no. 1 Novak Djokovic, fresh from a comeback from two-sets down on his last match, will play the top player from France for a spot in the semi-finals of the 2012 French Open. Frenchman no. 5-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga didn't have it easy either in his previous match as he let a 2-0 lead slip away and had to come back the next day to finish his fourth round opponent, Stanislas Wawrinka, and will now play in his first ever French Open quarterfinal. Watch exciting tennis action from Roland Garros 2012 featuring Djokovic vs Tsonga live here.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was a mightily relieved man when he converted his second match point on Stanislav Wawrinska's serve to win 6-4, 7-6(6), 3-6, 3-6, 6-4. The French fifth seed had come into the match carried over from last night with a 4-2 lead and lost the first game to relinquish his precious break. The Swiss then drew level at 4-4 and a potentially tight, drawn-out conclusion looked likely. No doubt annoyed at letting his lead slip, Tsonga had other ideas, running around his forehand to smash winners in the next two games and grasp victory from the valiant Wawrinka. Providing he makes full use of that devastating forehand in tomorrow's quarter-final, the Frenchman must have a (small) chance. Especially if Djokovic starts as sluggishly as he did against Andreas Seppi in the last round.

In Djokovic's last round, Italian Andreas Seppi had the world no. 1 against the ropes but failed to deliver a knockout punch and once he opened the door, the No. 1 raced through it and pulled off a 4-6, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 victory in a torturous four hours and 18 minutes. The Djokovic vs. Seppi contest was by no means pretty in windy conditions, but it was highly dramatic as the 28-year-old Italian outplayed the Serb from the backcourt in the first two sets and had chances in the last three sets to put his foot down. But if nothing else on the day, Djokovic was resilient, and in the final three sets played steely defense and mixed in some effective offensive charges in between. Victory was sealed after four hours, 18 minutes.

'Nole' did not dominate off his backhand side as he normally does, could not find a way to be super aggressive with his returns, or confidently outhit the Italian in crosscourt forehand rallies, but the experience he has gained in big matches over the past five years showed, as the five-time Grand Slam champion seized the majority of the big points. Djokovic used his strong legs, his sharp mind and big heart and clawed out a win with the wind whipping around Philippe Chatrier court.
"All the congratulations for his tournament and performance today," he said. " I think he was a better player for first two sets, definitely. I was very fortunate to come through to this match. I was fighting. When I was two sets down, I believed I could win the match, and I think that's the only positive I can really pick up from today's match."

It was only the third time that Djokovic had come from two sets down in his career, but he has now done it twice in the past nine months: against Rodger Federer in the 2011 US Open semifinals, and against Seppi today. The contest was simply about survival for Djokovic, who committed a whopping 77 unforced errors and struck only 45 winners. For his part, Seppi only nailed 43 winners and committed 81 unforced errors. Djokovic is under tremendous pressure in the tournament as he is attempting to become the first man since Aussie Rod Laver in 1969 to win four straight majors. He has not won a title on clay this season.

Azarenka vs Cibulkova 2012 French Open Match Highlights

Dominika Cibulkova upset world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka in what is arguably the second most shocking upset in the women's singles draw before the quarterfinals of Roland-Garros 2012. Watch the fourth round match highlights of the French Open match between Azarenka and Cibulkova here. The loss meant that world no. 6 Samantha Stosur, a previous French Open finalist, is the highest remaining player in the top half of the draw. Earlier in the day, Sara Errani eliminated 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 60 75 and world no. 10 Angelique Kerber beat Petra Martic 63 75 to advance against each other to the quarterfinals round. Cibulkova will next face the winner of the Stosur-Sloane Stephens match that is scheduled later in the day.

Cibulkova upsets Azarenka in Roland-Garros 2012 4th Round

Dominika Cibulkova, the no. 15-seed, eliminated world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka from the French Open 2012 currently being held at Roland-Garros in Paris. Cibulkova, a 2009 semi-finalist, used her clay court skills to full advantage to register a straight set 6-2 7-6(4) and improve to just 2-7 against Azarenka. The loss stopped Azarenka's 10-match winning streak at Grand Slams as the Belarussian won the Australian Open in January for her first major and catapulted her to the world no. 1 ranking. Cibulkova will now face the winner of the fourth round match between American teenager Sloane Stephens and world no. 6 Samantha Stosur of Australia.

The loss of Azarenka eliminated two of the three title favorites before the quarterfinal round. Earlier in the tournament, Azarenka was touted as potential French Open champion along with world no. 2 Maria Sharapova and no. 5 Serena Williams. Serena was eliminated in a first round shocker to an unseeded Virginie Razanno of France. Only Sharapova remains in the draw but she is playing her fourth round match on Monday, June 4. In Azarenka's top half of the draw, the highest remaining seed is no. 6-seed US Open champion Stosur. World no. 3, Agnieszka Radwanska, who was in Azarenka's half of the draw was eliminated in the third round.

Azarenka vs Cibulkova: French Open 2012 Match Statistics

Cibulkova won by being the steadier player in the match and having a +8 winner-unforced errors ratio. The first set was over in 44 minutes, and the second set took over an hour to complete. Total match time is 107 minutes. Cibulkova registered 3 aces against 0 to Cibulkova. She had more winners - 28 to 19, and less unforced errors 20 to 25. Cibulkova only had a 47% first serve percentage but won 68% of first serve points. Azarenka had a higher 79% first serve percentage but only won 52% of first serve points. Cibulkova won a total of 84 points against 68 won by her opponent.

The loss means that Azarenka may lose her world no. 1 ranking to Maria Sharapova if the Russian wins the French Open title. Anything less means that Azarenka will get to keep her top ranking. Cibulkova will now advance to her second Roland-Garros quarterfinal in six attempts. She lost in the first round last year and will improve her ranking with her performance this year.

The final 16 players remaining in the 2012 French Open singles draw has been decided and the top two seeded players and title favorites remain - world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka and no. 2 Maria Sharapova. Azarenka leads the women singles players in action on Day 8 of Roland-Garros 2012 with a battle with no. 15-seed Dominika Cibulkova for a place in the quarterfinals. Azarenka and Cibulkova have battled each other eight times in the past with Azarenka winning seven of those outings. However, Cibulkova is a strong clay court player reaching the semifinals in 2009 so she will be no pushover. Furthermore, the Slovak player has been in strong form losing an average of less than three games in the previous three rounds.

Watch Roland-Garros 2012 streaming live featuring world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka and the rest of the WTA starts in action in this year's French Open grand slam here. The Azarenka-Cibulkova match-up will be the second women's singles match at Court Suzanne Lenglen. Earlier in the day on the same court, world no. 10 and top German player Angelique Kerber will be aiming to reach a career high best achievement at the French Open when she tackles unseeded Petra Martic of Croatia. Martic has previously never beaten a top 10 player before the French Open but she eliminated top French hopeful and world no. 8 Marion Bartoli in the first round.

The top player remaining in Azarenka's half of the draw, world no. 6 Samantha Stosur, also will be aiming for a quarterfinal spot. She is going against American teenager Sloane Stephens who is playing in her first ever round of 16 at a Grand Slam event. Sloane will be guaranteed a berth in the London bound US-Olympic women's tennis team if she beats Stosur. That would be a tough match though as Stosur has beaten top players in Roland-Garros previously including a run to the 2010 finals where she beat Justine Henin and Serena Williams in consecutive matches. The first match at Court Philippe Chatrier will be between 2009 winner Svetlana Kuznetsova and no. 21-seed Italian Sara Errani.

Venus Williams - 2012 Olympics spot under threat by Lepchenko, Stephens

Who would have thought about it? Prior to the start of the French Open 2012, Venus Williams was clearly in the running for a spot in the 2012 US Olympics women's tennis team. She was ranked world no. 53, and was the third highest American in the rankings behind sister Serena (no. 5) and Christina McHale (no. 36). When Venus came back to the WTA tour after being diagnosed with Sjogren’s disease last year, she was ranked outside the top 100, but she made clear that her goal was to qualify for the US Olympic team. Eligibility to play in the 2012 London Olympics means you have to be ranked inside the top 60, and within the top four American women in the rankings, by June 11.

In an interview after her loss in the second round to world no. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, Venus said, "This tournament for me was all about getting to the Olympics. If that happens for me, I think the chances are good, then I come out a victor." Venus won two Olympic gold medals in the 2000 Sydney Olympics - in singles and doubles - and added a third gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics teaming up with sister Serena to win the doubles crown. As of this writing, Venus' spot in the US team is under threat by Varvara Lepchenko and Sloane Stephens. Both players have exceeded their career best performances in a Grand Slam by reaching the 4th round of Roland-Garros 2012. Here were the top ranked Americans prior to the start of the French Open:

1. Williams, Serena 5695
2. Mchale, Christina 1611
3. Williams, Venus 1175
4. King, Vania 1147
5. Lepchenko, Varvara 1029
6. Stephens, Sloane 928

Taking into consideration the French Open results to date, here are the current standings:

1. Williams, Serena 5690
2. Mchale, Christina 1675
3. Williams, Venus 1275
4. Lepchenko, Varvara 1209
5. Stephens, Sloane 1115
6. King, Vania 1087

One more win for Lepchenko and Stephens will mean they reach the quarterfinals of the French Open 2012 and earn at least 500 ranking points. When that happens, Lepchenko will have a total of 1429 while Sloans will have 1335. Those numbers will enable both players to overtake Venus and occupy the third and fourth spots in the US team. What are the prospects of both players winning their next matches? Stephens is up against world no. 6 and US Open champion Samantha Stosur. Lepchenko on the other hand, is up against world no. 4 and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

French Open 2012: Sloane Stephens among Most Popular

>> Friday, June 1, 2012

Hailed as one of the rising young stars of the WTA tour, American teenager Sloane Stephens has got an all-court game that bodes well for the future of American women's tennis. On Friday, Stephens put on a dominating display that saw her defeat a veteran player in 27-year-old Frenchwoman Mathilde Johansson in Court Philippe Chatrier - the main show court of the French Open. The result, a 63 62 victory that allowed Stephens to reach the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. Because of these results, Stephens is amongst the more popular players being searched on in the RolandGarros.com website.

In the French Open official website, Stephen's photo that depicted the player flashing an endearing mega-watt smile after beating Johansson is amongst the top 10 photos of the day. Two of the top six featured videos include her as well. One video featured the highlights from her third round match. Another video is of the 19-year old graciously answering questions from the press after her first visit to a Grand Slam's round of 16.

So far, Stephens has advanced without dropping a set in her first three matches. She beat world no. 37 Ekaterina Makarova in the first round 6-4 7-6(6). In the second round, she dominated fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-1 6-1. Stephen's next two matches, if she gets that far, will be two of the women's title favorites. World no. 6 Samantha Stosur is Stephen's next opponent on Sunday. If she does beat Stosur, she will then set-up a quarterfinal match-up against world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka.

Stephens started playing professional tennis in 2007, on an ITF circuit in Brazil. In 2008, she played her first WTA tournaments qualifying for the Miami and US Open at the age of 15. In 2011, Stephens had a breakthrough season reaching the top 100 for the first time. She reached the quarterfinal stage at Carlsbad and reached the third round of the US Open. She finished the year as the youngest player in the WTA top 100 rankings.

This year, Stephens failed to make it past the qualifying stages in Brisbane and Hobart, but she progressed to the second round of the Australian Open losing to former world no. 2 Kuznetsova in the process. In March, she was leading Angelique Kerber of Germany, now a top 10 player, in the second round 62 51 with two match points before she succumbed to pressure and lost the match 26 75 64. In her next tournament in Miami, she lost in the third round to Maria Sharapova. Her best performance at a WTA tournament to date was reaching the semi-finals at Strasbourg losing to eventual champion Francesca Schiavone.

This blog wishes the best for Stephens. If she wins her match-up against Stosur, she will be able to qualify as a participant in this year's Olympics. If that happens, she deserves it. With the grace and good example she's been showing, she's a good representative and ambassador for the United States. Congratulations and keep up the good job, Sloane.

Roland-Garros 2012 Sharapova Live Stream

The last day of third round action takes place on Saturday, June 2, and several title favorites in the French Open 2012 women's singles tournament step onto court to aim for a coveted round of 16 slot. World no. 2 Maria Sharapova is the main favorite in the bottom half of the draw especially with the shock upset of Serena Williams in the first round. Sharapova will be playing her second match in two days as her second round match was postponed to yesterday due to poor lighting - that leaves her just 24 hours to recover from her previous match which should be fine for Sharapova as she just lost a total of two games in her first two matches.

Sharapova will be the second women's singles match featured in Court Philippe Chatrier and she will be facing the no. 28-seed Shuai Peng of China. Watch the Sharapova vs Peng live action directly from Roland Garros 2012 here. Sharapova would be the favorite in this match as her powerful tennis shots will not be matched by the retrieving game of her Chinese opponent. The question is whether Peng can challenge Sharapova in at least one set. See the list of featured French Open 2012 women's matches on the last day of Round Three action at the bottom of this post.

With two rounds of play completed, six of eight seeded women players in Sharapova's quarter of the draw advanced to the third round. While Serena Williams has been removed from the draw, tricky players are still capable of challenging Sharapova from reaching the semi-finals. Talented Julia Goerges, the no. 25-seed is battling Arantxa Rus, the conqueror of Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano who eliminated Serena Williams in the first round. Then, there's former world no. 1 and now no. 9-seed Caroline Wozniacki who would very much like to reverse a series of so-so results in recent tournaments. Wozniacki will play Kaia Kanepi, the no. 23-seed.

Nadal Live at Roland-Garros 2012

When world no. 2 and tournament favorite Rafael Nadal steps into Court Philippe Chatrier on Saturday, June 2, he will be aiming to reach the round of 16 of the 2012 French Open grand slam tournament. The six-time titlist at Roland-Garros is looking for an unprecedented seventh French Open title, a feat no one has ever achieved in the Open era. His opponent will be a player who grew up in clay courts, the relatively unknown Eduardo Schwank of Argentina. All eyes will be on Nadal as he is expected to cruise into the round of 16, and move just four matches away from breaking yet another record.

Don't miss out on the action. Watch Rafael Nadal tennis live at Roland-Garros 2012 here. For a replay of all Nadal's matches at Roland-Garros 2012, visit this link. A list of featured men's tennis matches on the last day of third round action is listed at the bottom of this post.

After two rounds of action, the six of the eight seeded players in Nadal's quarter of the draw have advanced to the third round matches. The top four seeds in that section are still very much in the hunt, and two Argentine clay court specialists have gate crashed the party. Going for a fourth round spot is no. 8-seed Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. Tipsaveric would be going against vocal French support when he plays no. 29-seed Julien Benneteau of France. The match is the first of two men's singles matches in the main show court, the other being that of Nadal.

Other featured matches in the last day of third round action features no. 4-seed Andy Murray of Great Britain against Santiago Giraldo of Colombia. Murray has not been feeling well in recent days and it would not be such a big surprise if he falls to the Colombian who undoubtedly would have grown up in the clay courts of South America. Another featured match will be against former world no. 2 Tommy Haas of Germany going against Richard Gasquet of France. This match-up is at Court Suzanne Lenglen. Other top seeds in action include the man expected to reach the semifinals in Murray's quarter of the draw - Spain's no. 2 player and no. 6-seed David Ferrer. Ferrer will be going against Mikhail Youzhny for a round of 16 slot.
