Rafael Nadal's ranking has not changed that much since 2005, the first time he entered the top 5 after winning his first Grand Slam title at the French Open. He has been firmly entrenched in the top 5 since. Nadal's ranking has seen a precocious rise to the top since he was first ranked in 2001. Nadal was first ranked by the ATP ranking system on September 24, 2001 with a modest ranking of world #1002. He would end 2001 with a ranking of #811. By the end of 2002, Nadal breaks into the top 200 at #200. He would finish 2003 as world #49. He did not make much progress in 2004 due to an injury and ended the year outside the top 50 at world #51. In 2005, he won his first major beating then world #1 Federer in the semifinals of the French Open and rise all the way to the #2 ranking. He reached the #1 ranking on August 18, 2008 supplanting Federer after wins at the French Open and Wimbledon. He would relinquish the top ranking back to Federer on June 7, 2009 after a surprise fourth round exit at the French Open. With the emergence of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, Nadal falls all the way to #4 for three weeks between February and March 2010 before rising back to the top on June 7, 2010. Nadal would stay in the top position for more than a year before being supplanted by Djokovic after the Serb won his first Wimbledon title in July 2011.
