Video of Serena Crying during French Open 2012 1st Round Loss

She was many a tennis expert's pick to win her second Roland Garros title, and first in 10 years. But a Frenchwoman ranked outside the top 100 had different aspirations. Virginie Razzano played lights out tennis in dealing American Serena Williams her first ever loss at the opening of a Grand Slam tournament. In her 47th first round match, Serena lost an exciting 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 match to the inspired Razzano once ranked no. 16 in the world. Razzano, who dealt with recent tragedy after the death of her fiance was heavily supported by the partisan French crowd at Roland-Garros Court Phillipe Chatrier. Serena managed to save 8 match points before finally sending a ball out to spark a wild frenzy amongst the spectators.

Watch the video of Serena Williams crying during her French Open 2012 first round loss below. The video was taken after the second set tiebreak, and before the start of the third set. Serena Williams was up 5-1 in the tiebreak and two points away from winning what could have been a routine first rounder for the 13-time Grand Slam champion. Instead, nervous play and a never-say-die attitude from an underdog who had nothing to lose resulted in one of the greatest upsets in Grand Slam history. No, this wasn't the Serena who was struggling on clay. It was the Serena who came into the French Open with 2 clay tune-up victories and riding a 17-match winning streak on the surface. It's a reminder once again that there are no sure winners in tennis. Perhaps, only a guy named Rafael Nadal.
