Swiss tennis star Roger Federer overtakes Rafael Nadal to become the world no. 2 in the latest ATP World Tour men's tennis rankings as of May 14, 2012. Federer defeated Tomas Berdych 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the final of the 2012 Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday to win his ATP leading fourth title of the year and tie Nadal's record of 20 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles. Nadal slipped to no. 3 behind Federer and world no. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia. Nadal's slip in the rankings was mainly due to his being upset by fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the third round in Madrid.

Federer also won titles in Rotterdam, Dubai, and Indian Wells earlier in the year. The Madrid tennis tournament was his first clay court event this year. Since losing to top-ranked and eventual champion Djokovic in the US Open semi-finals, Federer has compiled an impressive 45-3 match record. His title in Madrid is his third in five finals appearances. He has now won a total of 74 ATP titles in his career.

The rankings this week is significant because there is only one more tournament before the seeding of players is finalized for the 2012 French Open. A no. 2 ranking means that Federer, if placed in the correct section of the draw, may not have to beat both Djokovic and Nadal to capture his second French Open title. Madrid semi-finalist Juan Martin del Potro puts himself in good position to get a top eight seeding by advancing two spots to no. 9. Verdasco is the biggest mover in the top 20 as he advances three spots up to become world no. 16.
