Sharapova, Serena in French Open 2012 Live Stream

The two main favorites to lift the Roland-Garros 2012 French Open women's singles title will be in action today, Tuesday, May 29. Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova take on unseeded opponents on their first round matches as they start their campaign to hoist this year's winners trophy. Serena is looking to add a second French Open title to her 2002 victory and increase her career grand slam total to 14. Sharapova, on the other hand, is aiming to win her first ever French Open title to complete the only Grand Slam missing from her trophy chest. Serena's first round opponent is Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano who is ranked no. 111 in the world, while Sharapova opens against world no. 78 Alexandra Cadantu of Romania.

Against Razzano, Serena will be playing someone she hasn't played before and a former world no. 16. She will also be going against a heavily pro-French and pro-underdog crowd, but it wouldn't be something that Serena hasn't seen before. Serena hasn't lost a first round match ever in a Grand Slam tournament and with her stellar play in the past two months winning 17 straight matches, the American should sail through this match easily. Nothing is certain in tennis however, and no matter what one has achieved in the past, there are no pushover opponents in women's tour. This is evidenced by world no. 1 Victoria Azarenka's hard earned three-set come-from-behind win to reach the second round. The Serena-Razzano match is the fourth and last match to be played at Court Philippe Chatrier for the day.

Sharapova's first round encounter with Cadantu is also their first time to meet at any WTA tennis tournament. Though Cadantu is playing in only her second Grand Slam, expect the world no. 2 to come out firing and not taking any chances against a lowly ranked opponent. The Sharapova-Cadantu match is going to be played as the second match in Court Suzanne Lenglen. Though Sharapova has "only" reached the semi-finals of the French Open twice, she is aiming to win the title this year and complete her Grand Slam collection as she previously won a title each at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. Sharapova's tune-up for this year's French Open has included two tournament wins in Stuttgart and Rome, and a quarterfinal loss to Serena in Madrid.

Several other seeded players are competing for a slot in the next round. No. 14-seed Francesca Schiavone will take on unseeded Kimiko Date-Krumm in the first match at Court Philippe Chatrier. Schiavone has reached the French Open finals two times in a row, winning in 2010 but losing to Li Na in 2011. Though her results have faded considerably in the past year or so, it is noteworthy to mention that she won her first WTA title just last week at Strasbourg after several months of not winning any tournament champion's trophy. Wimbledon champion and world no. 4 Petra Kvitova will face Ashleigh Barty of Australia for her first round match, and it scheduled as the first match at Court Suzanne Lenglen. In Court 1, former world no. 1 and now no. 9 Caroline Wozniacki will battle veteran Eleni Daniilidou for a second round spot.
