>> Friday, May 18, 2012

Five tennis players, two from the ATP men's tour and three from the WTA women's tour, made the Forbes’ 2012 list of the top 100 world’s most powerful celebrities. Of the five, 16-time Grand Slam champion and world no. 2 Roger Federer was the highest-ranked tennis player at No. 31. He is followed by world no. 3 Rafael Nadal at no. 47, women's no. 2 Maria Sharapova at no. 71, 13-time Grand Slam champ Serena Williams at no. 77 and 2011 French Open champion and Li Na at no. 87. Notable omissions from the list were the no. 1 players in the ATP and WTA tours for 2011 - Novak Djokovic and Caroline Wozniacki. Current WTA world no. 1 and Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka is also missing from the list.

The annual THE CELEBRITY 100 ranking is published by Forbes and covers the period from May 1, 2011, and May 1, 2012. The list includes "film and television actors, TV personalities, models, athletes, authors, musicians and comedians". Unlike other Forbes lists that are based on money and earnings, this ranking is based on money and fame. In the criteria used for fame, factors taken into consideration were media visibility in print, television, radio and online, plus social media power, which was measured by looking at each celebrity’s presence on Facebook and Twitter. The list is on its 13th year and started in 1999.
