Roland Garros 2012: Men's Singles Draw at the French Open
>> Friday, May 25, 2012
05/25 12.30 PM Paris: The draw for the Roland-Garros 2012 French Open is out with defending women's champion Na Li drawing the seeds. Interest was high on how the big three in tennis - Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer - would be placed out in the draw. Nadal is aiming for a record seventh title at Roland Garros while Djokovic is aiming to be the first player in more than 40 years to hold all four Grand Slam titles simultaneously. The potential quarterfinal pairings are as follows: (1) Novak Djokovic vs (5) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga; (3) Roger Federer vs (7) Thomas Berdych; (6) David Ferrer – (4) Andy Murray; and (2) Rafael Nadal vs (8) Janko Tipsarevic. 05/25 8.15 AM Paris: The Roland Garros 2012 French Open men's singles tournament draw will be announced later today. While the eventual champion in the year's lone clay court hosted Grand Slam will need the beat the best of the best men's tennis players, the draw provides excitement in that it provides an unpredictable route for the eventual champion. While most tennis fans would likely want to see a showdown between world no. 1 Novak Djokovic and world no. 2 Rafael Nadal, there are certainly potential pit-falls along the way that will prevent either one of them from reaching the French Open finals.
At the men's singles draw, the following would be answered:
1. Where will world no. 3 Roger Federer be placed in the draw? There's no doubt that to make the draw balance, it would be fair to put Federer in the top half along with Djokovic. Nadal is the overwhelming favorite to win a record seven French Open titles, and these two players are possibly the two best players to challenge Nadal on clay. It would be good to have these two square it off for a chance to face Nadal in the final.
2. Will world no. 4 Andy Murray live up to being the no. 4-seed? It will depend. Murray reached the semi-final of Roland-Garros last year, but that was on the basis of a very easy draw. Murray has struggled during the clay-court season failing to reach a single tournament semi-final, and injury has slowed down any progress on clay. There are however, many talented clay court players who can eliminate Murray. Spanish veteran and no. 6-seed David Ferrer, no. 7-seed Tomas Berdych, the finalist at Madrid, and world no. 9-Juan Martin del Potro can, at any given day, knock out Murray on clay.
