Tennis Tournament Winners: Ferrer's 3rd 2012 Title, Federer's 5th Dubai win, Hsieh's First Ever

ATP Tournament Winners: World #3 Roger Federer led the three tournament winners this week when he won his 5th Dubai title and 72nd ATP tennis tournament. Federer beat Andy Murray 75 64 to for his second tournament win in 3 weeks. Federer takes home $409,170 and 500 ranking points for his win. In the other ATP 500 tournament, world #5 David Ferrer defeated #25 Fernando Verdasco 61 62 to capture the Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournament in Acapulco, Mexico. It is the third tournament win of the year for Ferrer after his titles in Auckland last January, and in Buenos Aires last week. Ferrer’s only loss this year came at the hands of world #1 Novak Djokovic at the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Ferrer won $277,915 for his win in Acapulco and earns 500 ranking points.

The third winner of the week was #36 and 7th seed Kevin Anderson who won the ATP 250 tournament at Delray Beach. Anderson beat qualifier and #173 ranked Marinko Matosevic 64 76(2) in the finals. It was Matosevic’s first ever tour level final and the second ATP tournament win for Anderson to add to his first title win in Johannesburg last year. Anderson beat top seeded John Isner in the semifinals and takes home $75,780 in prize money and 250 ranking points.

WTA Tournament Winners: In the WTA tour, #36 Sara Errani of Italy beat the first and second-seeded players in back-to-back matches to win the Abierto Mexicano TELCEL tournament held at Acapulco, Mexico. Errani downed fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta 57 76(2) 60 to win her 3rd tour level WTA title and first since 2008. She was awarded $37,000 in prize money for the title and earned 280 ranking points.

At the BMW Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur, qualifier Su-Wei Hsieh who is ranked #123 surprised the field which included #5 Agnieszka Radwanska and former #1 Jelena Jankovic by winning her first ever tournament title. It was the second strong tournament showing for Hsieh in recent weeks as she also reached the semifinals of the Pattaya tournament earlier this year, again as a qualifier. Hsieh beat Petra Martic in the finals after Martic retired while trailing 26 75 41. The win assured Hsieh’s return into the top 80 as she earned 250 ranking points. Her prize money for winning the Kuala Lumpur title is $37,000.
