03/07 Tournament Preview: In the Indian Wells 2012 BNP Paribas Open, world #1 Novak Djokovic was drawn in the same half as #4 Andy Murray setting up a potential semifinal between the two rivals. Djokovic and Murray have split their two meetings this year, with Murray beating Djokovic in their last encounter in the Dubai semifinals. At the bottom half of the draw, #2 Rafael Nadal and #3 Roger Federer are both seeded to meet in the semifinals.

Federer is undoubtedly in the toughest quadrant of the draw. He is seeded to meet #27 Milos Raonic of Canada in the third round – Raonic, like Federer, is a two time tournament winner this year and was also runner-up in his last tournament in Memphis. #20 Jurgen Melzer is the winner of the Memphis tournament two weeks ago and could meet Federer in the fourth round. Federer’s quarterfinal opponent could very well be #5 David Ferrer, who is leading the ATP with 3 titles this season, or #9 Juan Martin del Potro, the Marseilles winner.

As for Nadal, he is seeded to meet #6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals. Federer and Nadal are looking to reach the final for the fourth time in Indian Wells. Nadal, who holds an 18-9 lead over Federer in their career head-to-head was the champion in 2007 and 2009 and was runner-up to Djokovic last year. Federer won three straight titles from 2004-06 but hasn’t reached the finals since then.
Djokovic could face Delray Beach champion Kevin Anderson in the third round and former top 10 player Richard Gasquet in the fourth round. His potential quarterfinal opponent would come from the section of the draw which includes #7 Tomas Berdych and former #1 Andy Roddick. Murray will certainly look to avoid another second-round exit for the second straight year. He is seeded to meet #8 Mardy Fish who will have to beat fellow American and #11 seed John Isner to reach the quarterfinals.

Murray will attempt to win Indian Wells for the first time of his career while Djokovic is aiming to win his third Indian Wells title after winning here in 2008 and last year. Murray and Djokovic previously met in this tournament in 2007 with Djokovic prevailing in straight sets. The winner of the 2012 BNP Paribas Open will take home a cool $1Million in prize money earnings. For the men’s singles tournament, main draw action begins on Thursday, March 8, 2012.
