Barcelona 2012 Prize Money: Nadal beats Ferrer, Earns €301K

World #2 Rafael Nadal beat world #6 countryman David Ferrer 76(1) 75 to win the 2012 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell in Barcelona, Spain. The win earned for Nadal the top singles prize of €301,150 and 500 ranking points. Nadal won his second title of the year after winning the Monte-Carlo tournament last week where he beat top-ranked Novak Djokovic. It was Nadal's third final of the year. He lost to Djokovic in the finals of the Australian Open in January. As runner-up, Ferrer earns €151,630 and 300 ranking points. Losing semi-finalists Fernando Verdasco of Spain and Milos Raonic of Canada each earned €76,870 and 180 ranking points.

The two finalists are in the top five money leaders list for this season. Nadal is #2 behind the ATP leading earnings of Djokovic. Djokovic has $3,618,889 earnings before the Barcelona tennis tournament while Nadal has $2,327,116 earnings. Ferrer won $792,665 before the tournament and is currently in fifth place. His earnings in this tournament will bring his total closer to the earnings of #4 Andy Murray.

In the carrer prize money leaders list, Nadal is #2 with a total of $47.4 million. He trails #1 Roger Federer who has amassed an impressive prize money haul of almost $70 million. Ferrer's Barcelona 2012 earnings will push him to #21 in the leaders list moving ahead of retired Spanish player and former world #1 Carlos Moya who has $13.4 million. Furthermore, Ferrer closes in the 20th position held by former French Open champion and world #1 Juan Carlos Ferrero. Ferrero has earnings of $13.8 million and is the second highest Spaniard in the ATP Career Prize Money Leaders behind Nadal.

Also in the career list, losing Barcelona quarter-finalist Andy Murray is closing in the ninth position held by Swede legend Stefan Edberg. Before the tournament, Edberg had $20.6 million while Murray had $20.3 million. Murray earned €38,960 for reaching the quarterfinal stage in this tennis tournament. He is expected to overtake Edberg for ninth place after the 2012 French Open. Murray is the only top 10 earner who hasn't won a Grand Slam and hasn't reached the world #1 ranking.
