ATP Tennis Tournaments: April 2012

The ATP tennis tournament calendar for the month of April will feature nine tournaments that will be played in various cities around the world. The month will start with the Davis Cup 2012 quarterfinals with the last eight teams battling for four semifinal spots. Spain will host Austria, France will host the United States, Serbia will be visiting the Czech Republic, and Croatia will be visiting Argentina. Due to their strong player line-ups, Spain and Serbia are favorites to claim semifinal slots.

The biggest April 2012 tennis tournament in the ATP calendar is the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters which starts on April 15. This event has a rich history dating back to 1897. In recent years, world #2 Rafael Nadal has claimed this as his personal playground winning seven straight titles since 2005. In this period, he has beaten Roger Federer in the finals three straight times from 2006 to 2008. He beat current world #1 Novak Djokovic to win the 2009 title.

In the past two years, Nadal claimed victory over fellow Spanish players Fernando Verdasco (2010) and David Ferrer (2011). The last player to win the title before Nadal’s dominance was Guillermo Coria in 2005. Other than Nadal, the past four champions had also been winners at the French Open including Juan Carlos Ferrero, Coria, and Gustavo Kuerten.

The second biggest tennis tournament in April is the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell tennis tournament which starts on April 23. This event has also been dominated by Nadal winning six of the last seven titles since 2005. The only other time that Nadal did not win this event was in 2010 when Fernando Verdasco beat Robin Soderling for the title. Nadal beat Ferrer in his last three tournament victories in 2008, 2009, and 2011.

Other tournaments for the month of April will be played in Casablanca, Morocco; Houston, USA; Bucharest, Romania; Munich, German; Belgrade, Serbia; and Estoril, Portugal.
