Azarenka vs Sharapova Indian Wells 2012 Finals Match Highlights

>> Saturday, March 17, 2012

The Indian Wells 2012 women's singles finals between world #1 Victoria Azarenka and #2 Maria Sharapova is available for viewing online here. Azarenka downed Sharapova in straight sets to win her fourth tournament of the year. | Finals Preview: Both players will be playing for the first time since Azarenka defeated Sharapova in the Australian Open championship match in January to claim her first Grand Slam title. That win also propelled Azarenka to the top ranking in the WTA tour and she has now amassed a perfect record of 22-0 for the year. This is the best start for a women's singles tennis season since Martina Hingis won more almost 40 matches to start her 1997 campaign.

Azarenka reached her fourth final of the season and first at the BNP Paribas Open with a straight forward 64 63 over Angelique Kerber of Germany. She has lost only one set on her way to the final. Sharapova advanced to the championship match when Ana Ivanovic retired in the second set with a hip injury. Azarenka holds a 4-3 advantage over the top Russian player in their career head-to-head and she has won their last three encounters in straight sets. She will be favored to win her first Indian Wells tennis tournament but no one is counting out the three-time Grand Slam champion who was also an Indian Wells champion in 2006.

Azarenka praised her German opponent and was quoted with the following statement after their semifinal. "I really was impressed by the way Angelique was playing... I think she showed some excellent tennis. It was the first time we played on the pro tour, so it was a little bit new for me. I think she's a great player, and she really pushed me to raise my level and really dig to win that match." The top ranked Belarussian will be aiming for her fourth title of the year after winning in Sydney, Melbourne, and Doha. She has reached six consecutive finals for the first time in her career, including finals appearances in her last two tournaments for 2011.

This will only be the third time since 2005 that the top two players in women's tennis will be facing off in the final of the Indian Wells tennis tournament. Sharapova will be going for her 25th WTA title, and her first since Cincinnati in August 2011. She won the opening set against Ivanovic 6-4 and was serving at 0-1 down in the second when the 2008 champion and former world #1 retired from the match. The winner of the Indian Wells 2012 tennis tournament will earn $1,000,000 - the biggest paycheck outside of the Grand Slams.

While Nadal is favored to win due to a superior 18-9 career head-to-head advantage over his Swiss opponent, it is the 16-time Grand Slam champion who has been the more consistent player in the past six months having won five of his last seven tournaments including two this year. The Stadium 1 court at Indian Wells is one of his more successful venues - Nadal has reached the semi-finals or better at Indian Wells the last six times he has played it. He was a singles champion in 2007 and 2009, and a doubles champion in 2010. His only pre-semi-final loss is this event dates back to 2004 when he was just 17 years old. He lost his third round to Argentina’s Agustin Calleri. In Mayer, he will be facing a player who is 0-7 lifetime against Top 10 players. Nadal is also attempting to be the first player since Boris Becker in 1998 to win both the singles and doubles titles at Indian Wells.

Why Tsonga will NOT win Indian Wells 2012

>> Saturday, March 10, 2012

There are two seeded players in the top 10 who, because of their placement in the draw, have the opportunity to win the Indian Wells 2012 tennis tournament by beating the top three players in the world (#1 Novak Djokovic, #2 Rafael Nadal and #3 Roger Federer) in consecutive matches. They are #5 David Ferrer of Spain and #6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France. I like Tsonga’s chances better – he has the better hard court record having won all his 8 ATP titles in the surface, and he’s been to the finals of one Grand Slam, the 2008 Australian Open.

Tsonga is 13-3 in matches this year and won the Doha tournament in January including a walk-over Roger Federer along the way. He certainly has had some success finishing in the top 10 in three of the last four years. He has earned $8.6 million in career prize money earnings so far – and yet, despite this success, it is hard to predict him capturing the Indian Wells 2012 title.

For starters, no one has beaten the current top 3 players to win a tournament. Tsonga will have to contend with Nadal in the quarterfinals. He has a 3-6 record against Nadal, but he did win their last meeting at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in straight sets. Nadal has had considerable success in Indian Wells winning in 2007 and 2009 and finishing runner-up last year. If Tsonga moves past Nadal, he will be going up against Federer in the semifinals.

Tsonga has a 3-8 record against Federer and he did win back-to-back matches against the 16-time Grand Slam champion last year – at the quarterfinals in Wimbledon and the round of 16 of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Canada. Yet, it was Federer who came out on top in their last four matches including a quarterfinal at the US Open. Federer also has a very successful career in Indian Wells being the only player in history to win the tournament three consecutive times.

Let’s say Tsonga gets by Nadal and Federer and reaches the finals where he will match-up against Djokovic. Of course, that can only happen if Djokovic will defeat Andy Murray in the semifinals. Amongst the three top players, Tsonga has a winning record over Djokovic holding a slim 5-4 lead in their head-to-head career match-up. Still, it is difficult to see Djokovic losing to anyone outside the Nadal-Federer-Murray triumvirate. And, Djokovic is the defending champion and also a winner in 2008 in Indian Wells.

As for Tsonga’s Indian Wells record, it is barely impressive. He has a 5-4 win-loss record in the tournament and his best achievement was reaching the fourth round in 2010 and 2008. Tsonga’s best chance is if someone can take out Nadal and Federer so he doesn’t have to face either one of them. If he reaches the finals, he would have a better chance against Djokovic than he has against Murray, who holds a 5-1 advantage over Tsonga.
Can Jo-Wilfried Tsonga win the Indian Wells 2012 tennis tournament? No. Not this year.

03/07 Tournament Preview: In the Indian Wells 2012 BNP Paribas Open, world #1 Novak Djokovic was drawn in the same half as #4 Andy Murray setting up a potential semifinal between the two rivals. Djokovic and Murray have split their two meetings this year, with Murray beating Djokovic in their last encounter in the Dubai semifinals. At the bottom half of the draw, #2 Rafael Nadal and #3 Roger Federer are both seeded to meet in the semifinals.

Federer is undoubtedly in the toughest quadrant of the draw. He is seeded to meet #27 Milos Raonic of Canada in the third round – Raonic, like Federer, is a two time tournament winner this year and was also runner-up in his last tournament in Memphis. #20 Jurgen Melzer is the winner of the Memphis tournament two weeks ago and could meet Federer in the fourth round. Federer’s quarterfinal opponent could very well be #5 David Ferrer, who is leading the ATP with 3 titles this season, or #9 Juan Martin del Potro, the Marseilles winner.

As for Nadal, he is seeded to meet #6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals. Federer and Nadal are looking to reach the final for the fourth time in Indian Wells. Nadal, who holds an 18-9 lead over Federer in their career head-to-head was the champion in 2007 and 2009 and was runner-up to Djokovic last year. Federer won three straight titles from 2004-06 but hasn’t reached the finals since then.
Djokovic could face Delray Beach champion Kevin Anderson in the third round and former top 10 player Richard Gasquet in the fourth round. His potential quarterfinal opponent would come from the section of the draw which includes #7 Tomas Berdych and former #1 Andy Roddick. Murray will certainly look to avoid another second-round exit for the second straight year. He is seeded to meet #8 Mardy Fish who will have to beat fellow American and #11 seed John Isner to reach the quarterfinals.

Murray will attempt to win Indian Wells for the first time of his career while Djokovic is aiming to win his third Indian Wells title after winning here in 2008 and last year. Murray and Djokovic previously met in this tournament in 2007 with Djokovic prevailing in straight sets. The winner of the 2012 BNP Paribas Open will take home a cool $1Million in prize money earnings. For the men’s singles tournament, main draw action begins on Thursday, March 8, 2012.

Earlier in the day, #15-seed Ana Ivanovic defeated #7-seed Marion Bartoli for her second straight win over a top 10 player. She ousted defending champion Caroline Wozniacki in the round of 16. Tournament Preview: WTA world #1 Victoria Azarenka is in arguably the most difficult quadrant of the Indian Wells 2012 women’s singles draw. She is scheduled to play 2-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round, Dubai finalist Julia Goerges in the fourth round, and Dubai title holder and world #5 Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals. Radwanska has previously complained about Azarenka’s gamesmanship after losing to Azarenka for the third straight time this year in Doha.

Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova is in Azarenka’s half of the draw. Kvitova may meet Paris winner Angelique Kerber in the fourth round. Kvitova’s quarterfinal opponent may be French Open champion Na Li who is expected to set-up an exciting fourth round match-up against 2-time champion and Pattaya winner Daniela Hantuchova.

World #2 Maria Sharapova is in the bottom half of the draw with defending champion and world #4 Caroline Wozniacki. Sharapova’s quarterfinal opponent is most likely the sixth seed and US Open champion Samantha Stosur. Wozniacki meanwhile is in a tricky part of the draw where she’s expected to meet former #1 and former champion Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round. Last year’s runner-up, Marion Bartoli, is seeded seventh this year and could very well be Wozniacki’s quarterfinal opponent if both reach that far.

Two former champions are absent from the Indian Wells 2012 event - Kim Clijsters is missing out this year due to an injury, while 13-time Grand Slam winner, Serena Williams has boycotted this tennis tournament after winning her second title in 2001.

The women's singles tournament at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells 2012 is scheduled to start on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 with first round action. [Watch Indian Wells 2012 Live Online]. All 32 seeded players have a first round bye. The winner of Indian Wells 2012 will take home $1,000,000 in prize money earnings and earn 1000 ranking points.
