Tennis Record set by Roger Federer
>> Tuesday, November 9, 2010
Another tennis record was set by Swiss world #2 and 16-time grand slam champion Roger Federer. Federer became the first player in this millenium to win 65 ATP tour titles when he beat world #3, Novak Djokovic of Serbia 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the final of the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Switzerland. It was sweet revenge for Federer as he lost to the Serb in the 2009 final. Federer, who was born in Basel, won his fourth tournament of the year. He earlier won at the Australian Open, Cincinnati, and Stockholm. He is now one tournament ahead of Pete Sampras, and solo fourth overall in this particular tennis record. He trails Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, and John McEnroe in the most number of ATP titles won. All three players ahead of Federer have retired before the year 2000.
Tennis Record: Most Number of ATP Titles won
Rank - Player - Titles Won
1. Jimmy Connors 109
2. Ivan Lendl 94
3. John McEnroe 77
4. Roger Federer 65
5. Pete Sampras 64
6. Björn Borg 63
7. Guillermo Vilas 62
8. Andre Agassi 60
9. Boris Becker 49
10. Thomas Muster 44
Federer is the top seed and will be vying for title #66 at the on-going BNP Paribas Masters in Paris, France. This will be his second to the last tournament of the year, and he will play his last in the eight-man field at the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. The world tour finals will be led by world #1 Rafael Nadal and will be held at The O2 in London from 21-28 November. If Federer wins both tournaments, he will push his tennis record to 67 titles - 10 less than John McEnroe who is currently at #3 with 77 tournament wins.
