WTA Women's Tennis Rankings as of July 9, 2012

Before the start of Wimbledon, there were three players with the chance of emerging as the world no. 1 player. French Open champion Maria Sharapova, Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka, and Poland's no. 1 player Agnieszka Radwanska all had a chance to be the WTA tour no. 1 player. Sharapova was upset in the fourth round and because she wasn't able to defend her ranking points from last year when she reached the finals of Wimbledon, she would lose the top ranking to either Azarenka or Radwanska. Azarenka lost her semifinal match to eventual winner Serene Williams but just had enough points to regain the top ranking from Sharapova after Radwanska lost in the final. When the new WTA rankings are released on Monday, July 9 - Azarenka would be the new no. 1 while Radwanska will rise to no. 2, a career high ranking. Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams rises to world no. 4, a year after making a comeback following foot surgeries and an emergency hospitalization.
