For the third time in his career, Roger Federer rises up to the world no. 1 ranking after a historic Wimbledon 2012 singles title that raised his record of Grand Slam wins to 17. On Sunday, Federer dashed the Grand Slam hopes of Andy Murray and all of Britain who was waiting for the first ever local hero champion at Wimbledon with a commanding 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory. With the win, Federer overtakes Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal to jump from world no. 3 to world no. 1 in the newest ATP tour rankings as of Monday, July 9, 2012. In the process, he now ties Pete Sampras' record of 286 total weeks as world no. 1.

Federer first reached the no. 1 ranking when he overtook American Andy Roddick on February 2, 2004. His first reign at the top came to an end when Rafael Nadal supplanted him as no. 1 on August 18, 2008. Federer stayed for a record consecutive stay at the top for 237 weeks during his first stint as no. 1. He again overtook Nadal on July 6, 2009 and stayed as no. 1 for an additional 48 weeks before Nadal took over on June 7, 2010. Federer is assured to break the current record of 286 total weeks at no. 1 when the rankings come out on July 16.
