WTA Women's Tennis Rankings: June 9, 2014 - Sharapova, Halep gain ground

Women's Tennis Rankings - June 9, 2014
World #1 Serena Williams imposing lead over the rest of the WTA tour was trimmed down when she was unable to defend almost 2000 ranking points in the recently concluded French Open. The American who fell in the second round still remains on top of the women's tennis rankings with 9660 points, clearly ahead of world #2 Na Li of China. Meanwhile, the two finalists who battled for the French Open rose in the rankings. French Open 2014 champion Maria Sharapova climbed back to the top 5 with 4741 points, while runner-up Simona Halep rose to a career high ranking of #3. Simona Halep is the first women's tennis player from Romania to be ranked this high.

Both French Open semi-finalists also rose in the rankings. Eugenie Bouchard of Canada continues to impress this season being the only player to have reached both Grand Slam semifinals this year. She improved her career high ranking by 4 spots going up to #12. The other losing finalist, Andrea Petkovic, is back to the top 20. The former top 10 player had numerous injuries in recent years but her clay court season this year was outstanding with her first trip to a major semi-final and her first Premier Title at Charleston in April. Former world #1 Victoria Azarenka fell down several spots into #8 as she missed the French Open this year.

In the Road to Singapore - Singles Leaderboard which measures the ranking points earned this year, Sharapova's 2nd Grand Slam win propelled her to the top ahead of Australian Open champion Na Li. Halep is currently #3 while Serena Williams holds the #4 position. Current world #4 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland holds the #5 position.

ATP Men's Tennis Rankings: June 9, 2014 - Nadal still on top

Rafael Nadal Men's Tennis Rankings
This coming Monday, June 9 2014 - Spain's Rafael Nadal will start his 139th week overall at No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. This comes after the heels of his historic fifth straight – and ninth overall – Roland Garros title. Nadal denied rival Novak Djokovic’s hopes of completing a career grand Slam by winning his 14th major title. He is now tied with American legend Pete Sampras at No. 2 in the Grand Slam title-leaders list on 14 major crowns. Nadal improved his record at Roland Garros to 66-1 and he has now won 35 consecutive matches. His only loss was in the 2009 fourth round, to Robin Soderling of Sweden.

Had Djokovic won the title, he would have returned to the world #1 ranking. This is the 2nd time he has finished as runner-up to Nadal at the French Open, the first time was in 2012. In his post-match interview, Djokovic reflected on Nadal's dominance on the clay courts of Paris. “Obviously his records speak for themselves,” said Djokovic. “He has won this tournament now nine times. It's very impressive… He has lost only once in his career on centre court. It's definitely not easy best of five to play against him in these conditions.”
