Rafael Nadal Men's Tennis Rankings
This coming Monday, June 9 2014 - Spain's Rafael Nadal will start his 139th week overall at No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. This comes after the heels of his historic fifth straight – and ninth overall – Roland Garros title. Nadal denied rival Novak Djokovic’s hopes of completing a career grand Slam by winning his 14th major title. He is now tied with American legend Pete Sampras at No. 2 in the Grand Slam title-leaders list on 14 major crowns. Nadal improved his record at Roland Garros to 66-1 and he has now won 35 consecutive matches. His only loss was in the 2009 fourth round, to Robin Soderling of Sweden.

Had Djokovic won the title, he would have returned to the world #1 ranking. This is the 2nd time he has finished as runner-up to Nadal at the French Open, the first time was in 2012. In his post-match interview, Djokovic reflected on Nadal's dominance on the clay courts of Paris. “Obviously his records speak for themselves,” said Djokovic. “He has won this tournament now nine times. It's very impressive… He has lost only once in his career on centre court. It's definitely not easy best of five to play against him in these conditions.”

2008 Olympic gold medalist and French Open champion Rafael Nadal, world no. 1 and Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, and 5-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic will lead an Olympic men's tennis singles field that consists of top ATP players from 33 different countries. Argentina, France, Russia, and the United States are the only four countries who will be sending the maximum number of four singles players into the men's draw. Brazil, India, Romania, Slovenia, Tunisia and Ukraine are countries that will be represented in the draw only because the ITF has extended wildcard entries to their top players. The other 56 players qualified based on their world ranking as of June 11, 2012. Fernando González of Chile, the 2008 silver medalist from 2008 will not be participating as he retired from tennis earlier this year. Tennis Olympics 2012 - Who will win in London?

It's a once-in-four-years experience for tennis players in the world's greatest sporting event - the Olympics. For the 2012 London Olympics, the top players in both the ATP and WTA professional tours will be in attendance led by current world no. 1 players Roger Federer and Victoria Azarenka. The Olympic tennis tournament will be held at the grass courts of the All England Club in Wimbledon, England from 28 July to 5 August 2012. The men's gold medalist in singles will be awarded 750 ranking points while the women's gold medalist will be given 685 ranking points. In perspective, these ranking points are more than what a Grand Slam quarter-finalist would receive but less than that of a Grand Slam semi-finalist.

Who are the favorites to win in London? For the men's singles tournament - current Wimbledon champion and world no. 1 Federer, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Rafael Nadal, Australian and US Open champion Novak Djokovic and hometown favorite and 2012 Wimbledon finalist Andy Murray are expected to contend for the gold medal. In women's singles, the prohibitive champion is 2012 Wimbledon titlist Serena Williams. Top ranked Azarenka - the reigning Australian Open champion, French Open champion Maria Sharapova, US Open champion Samantha Stosur, world no. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska and 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova are expected to challenge Williams for the gold medal.

Don't forget to return in two-weeks time as this blog will be covering the 2012 London Olympics tennis events. Five gold medal events are going to be contested - the men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles and the mixed doubles, a new event being played for the first time in 2012.
