128 players started in the Roland-Garros 2012 men's singles draw and now, we're down to the last 16. The top title favorites still remain in the draw led by world no. 1 Novak Djokovic and no. 2 Rafael Nadal. On Day 8 at the 2012 French Open, four round-of-16 matches will be played to determine the first set of 4 quarter-finalists in the men's singles draw. At Court Philippe Chatrier, the top-ranked Djokovic will battle Italian Andreas Seppi, the no. 22-seed for a place in the quarterfinal round. Djokovic is on a mission to be the first man since 1969 to hold all four Grand Slams titles simultaneously. He is aiming to join Nadal and Roger Federer as the players in the past 10 years to have won all four majors. Against Seppi, Djokovic is the heavy favorite to reach the quarterfinals. In his previous match, Djokovic was in fine form dropping just five games to end French qualifier's Nicolas Devilder’s dream run at Roland Garros 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. Djokovic is a perfect 7-0 against Seppi. The other featured men's singles match in Court Philippe Chatrier will be drawing a huge local coverage as France no. 1 player, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, will be going against no. 18-seed Stanislas Wawrinka for a spot in the last eight.

The two other matches in men's fourth round action in Court Suzanne Lenglen feature world no. 3 Roger Federer, the potential semifinal opponent of Djokovic. Federer will be the heavy favorite against lucky loser David Goffin of Belgium. The other match in the second show-court will be the only fourth round match featuring two top 10 players, and both are in top-form. World no. 7 Tomas Berdych will be up against no. 9 Juan Martin del Potro, both players had good tune-up tournaments with Del Potro defending his champion in Estoril and Berdych reaching the finals of the Madrid tennis tournament.

Dubai Tennis 2012: Federer beats Murray, wins 5th Dubai Title

03/03 Update: World #3 Roger Federer won a record 5th Dubai title by beating #4 Andy Murray in straight sets 75 64. The win is Federer's second title this month and his 72nd ATP tournament title. He earlier claimed the Rotterdam crown for his first title 2 weeks ago. Federer takes home $409,170 in prize money for winning Dubai 2012 but more importantly, he brings a 10-match win streak and into March where two of the biggest tournaments in the ATP calendar will be played in Indian Wells and Miami. In doubles, the #4 seeded pair of Bhupathi and Bopanna beat #3 seed Matkowski and Fyrstenberg to win the Dubai 2012 doubles tournament.

03/02 Update: In an exciting development at the Dubai 2012 tennis tournament, world #4 Andy Murray turned the tables on world #1 Novak Djokovic by upsetting the top seed in straight sets 62 75. Murray now advances to the Dubai 2012 finals where he'll be going against world #3 and 4-time Dubai champion Roger Federer. Federer needed two tiebreak sets against in-form Juan Martin del Potro 76(5) 76(6) to advance to the finals where he's going for a record 5th Dubai championship. The Dubai 2012 final will be the 15th meeting between the two players with Murray holding a rare 8-6 advantage over the 16-time grand slam champion. The two haven't played for more than a year with their last meeting occurring during the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in 2010. Federer beat Murray at a round robin match in straight sets. A win by Murray will push his career prize earnings to more than $20 million while if Federer wins, his record career prize money earnings will near the $70 million milestone. The doubles final will be between the 3rd seeded pair of Matkowski and Fyrstenberg vs the 4th seeded pair of Bhupathi and Bopanna.

03/01 Update: Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray set-up a semifinal showdown in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2012 in Dubai, U.A.E by beating top 10 opponents in straight sets. Murray beat Tomas Berdych 63 75 while Djokovic trounced fellow Serb Janko Tipsaveric 61 76(6). Djokovic and Murray last met in the semifinals of the Australian Open which Djokovic won in five sets. In the other semifinal, Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro both advanced for another re-match after Federer beat del Potro in the Rotterdam finals two weeks ago. Federer beat Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets 63 64 while Del Potro downed fourth seeded Jo-Wifried Tsonga 76(1) 62. Del Potro is aiming to become the first player this year to advance to three straight finals in three consecutive weeks after his Rotterdam runner-up finish and his Marseilles title last week. In the doubles tournament, the top-seeded doubles pair of LLodra and Zimonjic lost to the unseeded pair of Knowle and Peya.

02/29 Update: Seven of the eight seeds at the Dubai 2012 ATP tournament all advanced to the quarterfinals led by world #1 Novak Djokovic and 16-time grand slam champion Roger Federer. Djokovic and Federer enjoyed straight set wins to advance, and so did #3-seed Andy Murray, #4-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, #5-seed Tomas Berdych, and #8-seed Juan Martin del Potro. #7-seed Janko Tipsaveric also advanced but had to come from behind after losing a first set tiebreak. The only seeded casualty was top American player and #6-seed Mardy Fish who lost to former top-10 player Mikhail Youzhny.

The quarterfinal matches will feature several intriguing match-ups including three matches that will feature all top 10 players: an all-Serbian affair between Djokovic and Tipsaveric, Murray vs Berdych, Del Potro vs Tsonga. The only non top 10 affair is the quarterfinal between Federer and Youzhny. The winner of the Dubai 2012 ATP tournament will take home $409,170.

02/28 Update: #2-seed Roger Federer and #3-seed Andy Murray won in contrasting fashions to lead the advance of the remaining six seeds into the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2012 in Dubai, U.A.E. Federer beat Michael Llodra in straight sets 60 76(6) while Murray needed 3 sets to outlast Germany’s Michael Berrer. Other winners for the day included #4-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, #5-seedTomas Berdych, #7-seed Janko Tipsaveric and #8-seed Juan Martin del Potro. Top seeded Novak Djokovic and #6-seed Mardy Fish advanced to the second round on Monday, the first day of action at the Dubai 2012 ATP tennis tournament.

Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine eliminated the last of the wildcards when he beat Omar Awadhy of the UAE. Awadhy is a 30-year old unranked local tennis player who reached the top 850 of the world rankings for his career best in 2006. He joins two other wildcard players who lost in the first round – Marko Djokovic, the brother of Novak Djokovic and Sergei Bubka, the boyfriend of WTA’s #1 ranked Victoria Azarenka.

02/27 Update: World #1 Novak Djokovic won his 16th straight match at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships by eliminating Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in straights sets 64 62 at the start of the Dubai 2012 ATP tennis tournament. Djokovic now advances to the second round as he is attempting to become the first ever player to win the Dubai tournament in four consecutive years. He will be heavily favored to win his next match where he will meet the winner of Ukraine’s Sergiy STAKHOVSKY and UAE’s Omar AWADHY. Stakhovsky is ranked #74 in the world while Awadhy is a 30-year old local wildcard who is currently listed as unranked in the ATP tour website.

Joining Djokovic in the second round is American 6th seed Mardy Fish. Fish beat Andreas Beck 61 61 and will advance against the winner of the first round match between the Mikhail YOUZHNY of Russia and Richard GASQUET of France. World #3 and second seeded Roger Federer is scheduled to play his first match on Tuesday against Michael LLODRA of France. Llodra was a finalist in last week’s Marseilles Open. Besides Djokovic, Federer was the only other player to have won the Dubai ATP tennis tournament for 3 consecutive years. He achieved the feat in 2003 to 2005 and also won the 2007 tournament. Federer is going for his 5th Dubai title this year – a record for the tournament.

Two interesting wildcard players with strong athletic connections didn’t win in the first day of action. Marko Djokovic, the younger brother of Novak lost in straight sets to Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev. Marko who is currently ranked #869 gained entry into the tournament via a wildcard and he was beaten 63 62 by Golubev who is ranked #143 in the world. The other wildcard, Sergei Bubka, the 25-year old ranked #190 lost a closely fought match to #76 Lukas Lacko of Slovakia. Lacko emerged the winner after a third set contest that featured 30 points in the final tiebreak and where Bubka held multiple match points in a 26 62 76(14) loss. Like Marko Djokovic, Sergei Bubka is also connected to a tennis player #1 being world #1 Victoria Azarenka’s boyfriend. Bubka is also the son of Olympic pole vault champion Sergey Bubka.

Dubai Tennis Open 2012: Radwanska beats Goerges, wins Dubai 2012 Title

World #6 Agnieszka Radwanska beat unseeded Julia Goerges 75 64 in the final of the DUBAI DUTY FREE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012 in Dubai to win her 8th WTA title and rise to a career high #5 ranking in the world. The title is Radwanska's first of the season and fourth in the last 12 months. The victory is the Polish #1's second win against Goerges in two months. The two players met each other in the fourth round of the Australian Open last month and Radwanska also triumphed in straight sets. The win is worth $446,778 for Radwanska while Goerges will take home the runner-up prize of $242,815. In the doubles tournament, the top seeded American pair of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond defeated second seeds Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina for the crown.

02/24 UPDATE: Caroline Wozniacki's slide continues as she lost to unseeded Julia Goerges of Germany in straight sets at the 2012 DUBAI DUTY FREE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS. Wozniacki who is currently ranked #4 was the top player at the start of the year but hasn't reached a tournament final in a long time. Goerges also beat Wozniacki to win her first Premier-level title last year. In the Dubai final, Goerges will be clashing with Agnieszka Radwanska who beat former #1 player Jelena Jankovic in the other semifinal 62 26 60. Radwanska has been in fine form this year winning 14 matches and losing only to world #1 Victoria Azarenka in her last three tournaments. Radwanska defeated Goerges 61 61 in their only previous meeting at the Australian Open 2012 fourth round last month.

02/22 UPDATE: World #1 Victoria Azarenka withdrew from the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2012 with a left ankle injury. She was replaced in the draw by lucky loser Casey Dellacqua who lost to Julia Goerges in their second round match. The withdrawal of Azarenka means that the top two seeds in Dubai have withdrawn due to injury. The highest remaining seeds are #3 Caroline Wozniacki and #4 Sam Stosur. Both won second round matches on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals. Wozniacki beat Simona Halep in straight sets 62 63 to advance against former #1 Ana Ivanovic. Stosur beat Lucie Safarova 61 67(5) 61 to book a quarterfinal match with another former #1 Jelena Jankovic. All four quarterfinals matches will be played on Thursday to determine the four remaining semifinalists.

She will face Flavia Pennetta in the next round. Meanwhile, #5 seed Agnieszka Radwanska advanced with a hard fought 61 67(6) 75 over qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak. Memphis 2012 Tennis ATP: Melzer beats Raonic in Straight Sets to win Memphis

Unseeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer beat Canadian 4th seed Milos Raonic to win his fourth ATP tournament at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships 2012 in Memphis. Melzer won in straight sets 75 76(4) in a 97-minute battle to secure his third consecutive win over a seeded player in the tournament. Melzer downed top seeded John Isner in the quarterfinals, 3rd seeded Radek Stepanek in the semifinals and now prevented Raonic from winning his third tournament title of the season. It was Melzer's first tournament title since he won the ATP tournament in Vienna in 2010. Melzer will take home the $277,915 in prize money and 500 ranking points for winning the tournament. Raonic will take home the runner-up prize money of $125,300 and 300 ranking points.

02/25 UPDATE: Fourth seeded Milos Raonic of Canada is through to his third title match of the year by advancing to the finals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships 2012 in Memphis. Raonic defeated Benjamin Becker in straight sets 64 64 and advances to his second straight tournament final in two weeks. Raonic will battle Austrian Jurgen Melzer for the title after Melzer advanced with a 3-set victory over #3 seed Radek Stepanek 64 36 63. It was Melzer's second straight upset victory after he beat top-seeded American John Isner in the quarterfinals. Raonic and Melzer have not met before in any ATP tournament but both players have won 3 ATP tournaments in their careers. The Memphis tournament singles champion will take home $277,915 in prize money and 500 ranking points while the runner-up will win $125,300 and 300 ranking points.

02/25 UPDATE: #4 seed Milos Raonic is on track to win his 3rd tournament of the season after he beat Olivier Rochus in straight sets to advance to the semifinals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships 2012 in Memphis. Raonic will be the lone North American player left in the tournament after Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey both lost their quarterfinal matches. Raonic will now face Jurgen Melzer who disposed of the top-seeded Isner, also in straight sets. The other semifinal will feature #3 seed Radek Stepanek against unseeded Benjamin Becker. Stepanek defeated 2010 champion Querrey while Becker downed Lukasz Kubot, both wins came in straight sets.

Ivan Dodig caused a minor upset by beating #7 seed Bernard Tomic in a third set tiebreak. #2 seed Andy Roddick will start his campaign against Xavier Malisse on Wednesday evening.

02/21 Update: The Regions Morgan Keegan Championships 2012 in Memphis, USA is the first million dollar tournament in North America for this tennis season. Several ATP players congregate to play tennis in Memphis including top American players John Isner and Andy Roddick. Talented and young Canadian Milos Raonic will be going for his third title of the year after wins in Chennai last month, and in San Jose last week. Young American players Donald Young and Ryan Harrison are also present in the main draw.

The defending champion is Roddick, now the #3 American behind Isner and Mardy Fish. He is going for his fourth ATP Tennis Memphis tournament title. In 2011, he defeated Raonic in three tightly contested sets 7-6(7), 6-7(11), 7-5 to win his 30th ATP tour title. Former tournament champion and current #85 American Sam Querrey returns to play in the tournament, he beat Isner in 2010. Other promising players in the list include young Australian Bernard Tomic who reached his first Grand Slam fourth round in Melbourne last month. Tomic is seeded 8th this year.

After the draw has been announced, fans will be looking forward to the following match-ups: Isner vs Tomic in the quarterfinals, a potential rematch of last year’s final match between Roddick and Raonic in the semifinals, and finally, an explosive match between Isner and Roddick if both reach the finals.

Nadal vs Djokovic 2012 - The Rivalry Continues

Let's face it. Nadal Djokovic 2012 is the tennis rivalry of the year. Will Rafael Nadal ever solve world #1 Novak Djokovic? The Spaniard has now lost to the Serb in their past 7 meetings, the last three in Grand Slam finals. Still, Nadal holds a 16-14 advantage over Djokovic but this advantage hasn't been seen by tennis fans since 2010. Every single match they've played in 2011 and this year (although there's been only one), has gone Djokovic's way. In a rivalry that is expected to thrill every tennis fan and tennis spectator, expect Nadal to at least win some matches this year. Djokovic beats Nadal, wins Australian Open 2012 for 5th Grand Slam

In the longest Australian Open men's singles final in history, world #1 Novak Djokovic stamped his mastery over his closest challenger, #2 Rafael Nadal, by winning a memorable fifth set battle that lasted beyond midnight. His 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 victory is his third consecutive Grand Slam final win over his Spanish rival. It was also Djokovic's seventh consecutive victory over Nadal since January 2011 and has now edged closer in their head-to-head match-up by winning 14 of the 30 matches. Djokovic showed unmatched mental fortitude during the five hour battle even when Nadal conjured a scintillating fourth set comeback after losing decisively in the second and third sets. Djokovic celebrated his fifth grand slam title and third Australian Open title by ripping his shirt in front of a boisterous and adoring crowd.

There were a total of 369 points in the match with Djokovic winning 193 of them. Nadal was better in first serve accuracy by putting 67% of his first serves in while Djokovic served 59%. Nadal had 10 aces against Djokovic's 9 aces, but Nadal had 4 double faults while Djokovic had 2. Djokovic had a faster average serve for both his first and second serves. Djokovic came out on top on the number of winners with 57 while Nadal had 44. Nadal and Djokovic almost had the same number of unforced errors with Nadal's count at 71 while Djokovic had 69. Azarenka Victoria wins Australian Open 2012 for 1st Grand Slam

After a shaky first two games, Victoria Azarenka overpowered Russian world #4 Maria Sharapova to win the Australian Open 2012 women's singles title, and her first career grand slam title. Azarenka will now become the new #1-ranked player, the 21st player to reach that milestone and the first player, male or female, from Belarus to reach the top ranking. She earned AUS$2.3 million dollars for her victory pushing her career earnings total beyond $11 million.

In a highly anticipated contest, the match was expected to go the distance as both players were in top form heading in to the final. After Azarenka dropped the first two games to go down 0-2, she won twelve of the next thirteen games to win the title in 82 minutes. It was a very impressive victory for the Belorussian player who had a history of disappointing losses in Melbourne, and who was not previously known for her mental strength. She lost a couple of matches to Serena Williams in previous years despite a huge lead. In both years, Williams had gone on to win the title.

Azarenka had a 71% success in her first serves as compared to Sharapova. She had a good 14 winners to 12 unforced errors, while it was clearly the high unforced errors from Sharapova which kept the match from being competitive. The Russian had the same 14 winners as Azarenka, but committed more than twice as many errors with 30. Azarenka also controlled the net winning 7 of 8 net approaches. She broke Sharapova 5 times, and was only broken once. She took advantage of Sharapova's weak second serve to win 14 of 17 points. Sharapova's return, which was very effective against previous opponents did not do much damage against Azarenka. Azarenka won 68% of her first serve points, and also a majority of her second serve points at 53%. Azarenka controlled most of the rallies that went more than three shots, with majority of the points ending in a Sharapova error.

It was another Australian Open final disappointment for Sharapova. The runaway score where she won three games is the same as the number of games she won when she lost to Serena Williams in 2007. Sharapova should still be pleased with her performance here and in her progress in the past 24 months. She also reached the final at Wimbledon before losing to Petra Kvitova. She will be ranked at #3 when the new rankings will be released on January 30 behind Azarenka and Kvitova.

Azarenka remains unbeaten this year and is enjoying a 12-match winning streak. She also won the warm-up tournament at Sydney and is expected to be a force to reckon with in the next few months as she has previously shown that she is a very good hard court player. Despite playing in her first grand slam final and was the far less experienced player against the three time Grand Slam champion, Azarenka went into the match with full confidence as she has beaten Sharapova soundly in their previous 2 hard court matches. It the end, there was not much Sharapova could do to derail the inevitable. Victoria Azarenka has fulfilled her potential, won her first grand slam title, and is now the top-ranked women's tennis player.

Azarenka vs Sharapova: who will win Australian Open 2012?

After winning three-set semifinal matches against recent Grand Slam winners, world #3 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and world #4 Maria Sharapova of Russia set-up a promising Australian Open final that will determine who will be the next world #1 in women's tennis. Azarenka beat defending champion Kim Clijsters to reach her first ever grand slam final while Sharapova avenged a Wimbledon final loss to Petra Kvitova to reach her second grand slam final in the past 7 months. The two have met six times before, and they have split their past matches winning three matches each. Though Azarenka beat Sharapova in Moscow in 2007 for their first match, it was Sharapova who won their last meeting in Rome last spring after Azarenka retired in the second set after winning the first set. Azarenka however must fancy her chances heading into the championship match as she has beaten Sharapova handily in their past two matches in hardcourt - in the 2010 Stanford final, and also, in the 2011 Miami final.

As an added bonus, the champion of this year's Australian Open will ascend to the #1 ranking replacing Caroline Wozniacki. If current world #3 Azarenka wins the title, she will become the first player in rankings history to become #1 without having previously ever been #2 (not counting Chris Evert, who was No.1 when the rankings debuted on November 3, 1975). She would be the first Belarusian to hold the top spot and the 21st player to become #1 since 1975. Sharapova was the first Russian #1 when she ascended to the position on August 22, 2005. She has spent a total of 17 weeks in the top spot, having gained the top ranking four times previously. The last time Sharapova was #1 was in June 2008.

Sharapova is two years older than Azarenka and undoubtedly had more achievements over her next opponent. She has won 24 titles and earned $16.6 million for a career that started in 2002. Amongst those 24 titles are grand slam titles she won in Wimbledon 2004, US Open 2006, and Australian Open 2008. Azarenka has won 9 titles so far and earned $9 million since she started playing professionally in 2004. While Azarenka may not compare well against Sharapova in terms of career achievements so far, she has definitely been the more consistent player in the past 3 years ranking ahead of the Russian in the year end rankings of 2009, 2010, and 2011. She has won all her 9 titles since 2009 while Sharapova earned 5 titles within that period.

In their paths to the finals, both women played two straight setters. Sharapova triumphed over Sabine Lisicki in the fourth round despite losing the first set, and she lost the second set in her semifinal win over Kvitova. Azarenka has played consecutive two-hour matches in her past 2 wins. She lost the first set against Radwanska in the quarterfinals and lost the second set against Clijsters in the semifinals. Both players will be battle ready when they take to the court on Saturday.

Murray vs Djokovic - who will face Nadal?

When world #1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia faces world #4 Andy Murray of Great Britain, it will mark the 11th time that the two friends will be facing each other after both turned professional. Both are 24 years old, with Murray born a week earlier than Djokovic. They are hitting partners and play football together. They have known each other since before they were teens, playing against each other for the first time in a junior tournament in France. In recent Grand Slam history, both have reached the semifinals or better in the past 5 grand slams. However, the similarities end there. While Djokovic has won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open in 2011 to up his grand slam titles to four, Murray has still to win one grand slam title.

Djokovic leads their head-to-head match-up 6-4, but Murray won their last encounter. This was at the finals of the ATP World Tour Masters in Cincinnati last August when Djokovic retired while trailing 4-6, 0-3. This would mark Djokovic's second loss for 2011. Both players have played remarkably in the earlier rounds of this year's Australian Open. However, it is difficult to see Murray overcoming Djokovic at this time. I think the defending champion will beat Murray in a tight 4-setter and move on to his third straight championship match against world #2 Rafael Nadal.

Spain, Argentina reaches 2011 Davis Cup Finals

2011 Davis Cup Semifinal Results: Spain beats France, Argentina downs Serbia

Spain won both its reverse singles matches in Day 2 to beat France 4-1 and advance to the 2011 Davis Cup finals. Rafael Nadal beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets 6-0 6-2 6-4 to clinch the third point in the tie, and Fernando Verdasco beat Richard Gasquet 6-2 6-1 in the final match. In the other semifinal match, world #1 Novak Djokovic was forced to retire while trailing 6-7(5) 0-3 to Juan Martin del Potro. Janko Tipsaveric then won against Juan Monaco who retired in the non-bearing fifth match 6-2 0-0 for a final score of 3-2 in favor of Argentina. The loss meant that Serbia will not be able to defend its championship in the Davis Cup finals to be held this December. Argentina now advances to its fourth Davis Cup final and will be aiming to win its first title against Spain. Spain is the most successful nation in the tournament in the past 12 years winning the championships in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2009 while finishing runner-up in 2003. The USA continues to be the most successful Davis Cup nation with 32 titles with the last title coming in 2007. Australia follows with 28 Davis Cup titles.
